Hey everyone. I just registered my interest for the wii u in my local GAME. I was having a conversation with the manager about the wii u. He was telling me how much it would crash and burn saying things like casual gamers and families will not bother upgrading from the wii to the wii u and also all 360 and ps3 users will have there new console in 18 months time or so. I couldnt believe it I felt crushed in one way. I really want the wii u to be successful in everyway I don't want to see it ending up like the ps vita and hardly selling well. I am still going to buy my wii u come launch because I love Nintendo and their games. Do you guys think the wii u will be a success?

Nintendo has been around for a long time. They may not make the most powerful systems around, but what they lack in power they make up in fun. That's what video games are about and I feel the newer generation of video gamers have lost touch of that valuable aspect. So yes, it will be successful.

It may not take off like the Wii did, but it will still sell. Nintendo franchises, such as Mario, Mario kart, Zelda, Animal Crossing, etc. are hugely popular, and will move systems. As long as it is priced reasonably, with a sizable line up, it'll succeed. Whether the public will take to the tablet like they did to the motion controls is a whole other discussion altogether.

No it wont

The core Nintendo fan wont buy it unless it's bundled with WiiFit or something along those lines

Sure the smaller niche fan will buy it for Mario and things but we've already seen that those niche markets can't make a console survive (Gamecube)

Of course it will be successful. It will have almost all of the games popular with hardcore gamers. Such a game library would easily attract hardcore gamers to the Wii U.

there are just way too many variables. its really hard to say. last E3 was also not encouraging. granted ninty botched the announcement and completly fudged the info but there also wasnt a 6 hour que for people to have a go. the most important thing ninty have to get right at E3 is show value in the new setup. if the uses of the controller seem pointless and tacked on then ninty are going to have a really hard time persuading people to take the plunge. wii sports was the catalyst for the wiiu. it made people think "yeah...that makes sense..that could be very cool" and then it got their imaginations firing (which, arguably, bit ninty in the backside a bit). if ninty spend 40 minutes talking about how wiiu games can be played on the TV and then switched to the controller then itll be dead in the water. but there are still so many other variables like: how much? what is in the box? how powerful is it? will ninty fans actually buy 3rd party games on the wiiu? will there be enough value in getting a wiiu for owners of other platforms? will services like live and PSN seriously hamper uptake of nintys services? in my own case i could actually see myself buying less wiiu games then i did wii games. over half my wii games are 3rd party but they are all exclusive. i get multiplats for my PC and i dont see the wiiu changing that. so we shall see. very hard to say.

New Super Mario is a game for the casual audience = Nintendo's core, and even then it's performed pathetically with that market.

Something that people remember playing when they were kids and nw that they have kids themselves and jobs and other responsibilities it's a form of nostalgia

Now WiiFit on the other hand? Something designed for Nintendo's core hits home with almost 80 million.

Mario Kart, Sports Resort, and WiiPlay are all around the 30 million marks

Mario Galaxy is the game for the niche and it shows that only 10 of the first installment and 6 of the follow up were sold.

WiiU doesn't have anything for Nintendo's core right now, that needs to change going forward

lol...you failed

NSMBwii is a niche fan game..sold 20million...thats huge call of duty numbers... its too hard for causals(core) to beat...dont give me that nostalgia bull..the niche fans buy it for nostalgia not the casuals...casuals just know the name mario and thats it.

galaxy another niche fan game 10million galaxy2 8million

mario kart was a niche fan game too before the casuals liked it and it sold 30million

smash bros niche game 8million

---

8million is just as much as a game like halo/gears of war/gran turismo sells....this generation nintendo's "niche" market was quite big.

As of right now, Wii U doesn't have anything for any of Nintendo's audiences, core or not. Very little in the way of software has been announced at all. I'm sure that situation will be resolved at E3.

Only 10 million? Those are numbers most games could only ever dream of reaching.

Pretty much this, really just gotta wait for E3, not enough info true info/fact..most info flying around on net are just rumours.

I want WiiU to be successful however...more competitions is always better than less, heck I wish Sega would comeback..but they're happy with their pachinko machines.

You do realize that the top 10 best selling Wii games outsold the best selling games on the other 2 systems?

Mario Galaxy sold almost 11 million units and Galaxy 2 sold over 6 million. If that is your idea of a niche audience, I'd hate to hear what you think of the other 2 systems best-selling titles target audience. The Nintendo core isn't a bunch of casuals. It's a lot of people who just enjoy fun games like Mario and Zelda, many of which who have ben loyal to the company since the 80s. I really don't think the WiiU will fail, too many core fans.

I'm sure it'll launch with a hardcore title, we'll just have to wait until it's been revelaed. It's a new system. Of course it's not going to have a large library of Nintendo games.

So what you don't expect that to change? You think the people at Nintendo are paid millions of dollars to sit on their thumbs?

On topic: Of course it will be successful. Even if they sell 22 million units, so long as they sell it a good profit per unit they'll make bank on it despite whether they end up third, second, whatever.

This. They'll maintain their appeal to casual players, and with a two - three year headstart on the other companies, they'll have a long period during which hardcore console gamers will have the Wii U as their best choice. GTA V and AC 3 are already announced for the console - GTA alone will haul a massive amount of players (I'm assuming the Wii U will have hardware advantages, other than the unique controller, to the PS3 and 360), which will want to play the better version of the game, without having to purchase a computer. Imagine what yearly releases of Call of Duty, new racing games and whatnot -- all graphically superior and with a new control scheme on the WiiU -- won't do to the console's playerbase.

GTA V has not been announced for the Wii u. There is no confirmation that its coming to the Wii u yet let all hope we hear something at E3. So far its only been announced for the ps3/360 and probably pc.

It's as safe to assume GTA V will be on the Wii U as it was to assume GTA IV would be on the 360. Rockstar has absolutely no reason not to do so, and several 'analysts' (I can't attest to their credibility, but they certainly have more than forum-posters) have confirmed that they strongly believe it will be released on the Wii U, since it will be of great benefit to Rockstar.

Personally, I don't care about GTA V. But it is a system pusher (specially when there's a big discrepancy in the versions), and I can think of no reason for Rockstar to forego millions of potential sales, specially when they've already expressed interest in developing for Nintendo and have developed before (Bully and Manhunt 2).

Yes the Wii U will sell millions of consoles during it's lifespan. 35 Million total sales would be my guess over the lifetime of the Wii U. Casuals will not buy this new console.

Yes. It will most probably be the best-selling next-gen console and bought by casuals, Nintendo fans and core gamers-alike (except for those stupid ones who have prejudice against Nintendo and those who simply don't like Nintendo or are satisfied with their platform).

Too many unknown factors. If it is powerful enough to get quality ports of the multiplatform games the 720 and PS4 get than yes most likely it will. Launch games will also make a big difference. Having a Wii Sports like demo bundled would encourage sales. A really cool launch game like New Super Mario Bros or Mario Kart would be an evergreen game and move many units too. In the end games will be the deciding factor... even more so than how good of use they make of the tablet.

Well since the only games confirmed for the system at this E3 are a new Pikmin (core appeal) and a New Super Mario Bros. (mass appeal for both core and casual players). The system might have a very strong start.

I hope Nintendo puts in more effort to show us what their new hardware/software combination is capable of. The end result of this gen still left many not entirely convinced with the hardware/software combination the Wii offered.

While the Wii-mote offered superior controls in certain games, it was also inferior in many others. Maybe this is good enough as long as it offers new experiences in certain games, but thats only my opinion and I'd like to think Nintendo was aiming for something higher. I don't think there will be as many people buying into the Wii U hype this time unless they do a better job at convincing us with the benefits of their combination, a little earlier than how late it took them to release Motion+ and the few games that supported it. Motion+ was too "better late than never" for me.

Well, they'll certainly get my money. I actually think they'll sell a bunch of Wii U consoles. People are always curious and they are releasing it way ahead of the competitors. Just combine that with a nice launch line-up and they're set.

I honestly thought Nintendo did a great job of showing off how well it's own software worked with the hardware... aside from the FPS genre of course. Games that made good use of the hardware were ones that didn't try too hard and used common sense instead of over-baked forced motions. Take Super Mario Galaxy, Pikmin, and RE4 (I know third party and ports)... these games got it, they were quality without the remote, but were made much better by implementing it in ways that made sense. The pointer was the Wii remotes strongest attribute... of course this is just my opinion. For the tablet I'm personally not looking for over the top implementations that take away from the devs putting effort towards the actual game itself; this is where many third part games failed with the Wii. Take RPGs for ,example I'd be happy with the tablet being used for maps, inventory, general info, etc in order to streamline the experience, take away on screen clutter, and just make the game feel more fluid. With games like Madden for example; play calling, route drawing, etc... none of this is over the top, but rather just SIMPLE ways that make the experience of already good games better.

As long as the games are made to the systems strengths, then the Wiii U will do just fine. But if 3rd parties cheap out like they did on the Wii and deliver gimped games with half ass production values and gimmicky controls, or release the ton of shovel ware games, then people may just lose interest.
