Do you think The World Ends With You is overrated?

I've seen a couple people playing this game and I really don't get it's appeal. Maybe I'm just too old for games like this. The theme seems like something that appeals to the Hot Topic crowd; angsty teenagers and such. I got pretty sick of the main character's attitude pretty quickly, as I was not at all amused or thought it was anything new. I don't understand all the hype this game is getting... It's like they're just selling it on its Square-Enix namesake and attitude, but I'm so over both. Would someone mind explaining what's actually so great and different about this game, so I don't keep believing that it's just riding on the whole "me too" selling point?

I think it's a great game, but I'm only on day 4.

So far, I like mastering pins, kind of reminds me of catching 'em all, like from Pokemon. And there seems to be many more things I can do, like spend money, and also I like lowering my hp for bonuses. The story's decent and I graphics are entertaining to me.

I don't think it's THE greatest game for the ds, but I'm glad it's in my collection. And as long as I don't play hour after hour everyday, I look forward to enjoying it for weeks.

So, no, I don't think it's overrated.

Same here and personally I don't like the game. I thought it would have been better, but sadly it isn't. Just another case of a game being ruined by overhyping by fanboys.

a little probably, i mean, in some ways you can't get as much hype as its getting without some of it being overboard

its a pretty good game nontheless though. with the recent success of P3 (no, i'm not clueless about the megaten series' history; yes, i know it has an old preexisting fanbase. but for the most part only the most hardcore of fans remember more than your last entry, and for megaten it was P3 and P3 was quite successful) (and before someone says it, yes, P3 IS part of the megaten franchise's umbrella. considering the counter argument is based on what the japanese title is, you won't find any japanese fan that says otherwise. only westerners trying to act hardcore and think they're getting some sort of cred by acting anal about the official japanese title say otherwise), its modern setting gets it some attention.

it also gets some extra hyping for its beyond the norm usage of the touch screen, but honestly the touch controls aren't really as tight as i personally would've liked them.

and finally it does have a fairly unique art style to it all

so TWEWY does have some merit to the acclaim its getting. but yes, some of its shortfalls (its story isn't THAT good, its controlls could be tighter, its characters are a little over the top with their angst) are getting glossed over with the hype

If your not even going to play it, Im not even going to bother describing how unique, creative, and fresh it is. Ive been a gamer for many, many years and this game was a much needed breath of fresh air for me.

That's exactly what I was going to say.

The game is really fantastic and every single bit of the game has been polished to a degree you just don't see much of these days.

It's a whole new spin on the RPG genre. Not only with the setting but the fact that instead of leveling up with the most powerful weapons to get the most treasure you need to level down with weapons to get the biggest reward.

I think YES, its overrated. I have the game and i wish i didnt have. I really think that there is a huge generation difference between gamers, i know i cant blame noone who says that game is good. But i always hear two things:

1- Its good

2- Am I too old for this kind of game?

Any game getting 9.0 or above is overrated nowadays...

i think the game is the best game on ds (yes beats even zelda which i loved)

the game has many new refreshing unique stuff that i wont bother going into here, since it sounds like most people who dont like the game dont like it cause of its young hip style

im 28 so not the tipical teen that people seem to think this game is ment for

maybe some people who dislike the style would have liked it otherwise, cause some things with this game is really good and i wish all games had it (like beeing able to change difficulity level whenever...why dont all games have that???)

but yeah its really no point in telling the good stuff if someone already think its overhyped and not their style

I despise 1. RPG's 2. Anime 3. I think the "I'm a loner" persona is so stupid and 4. Hot Topic. But I still managed to fall deeply in love with this game.

The atmosphere and style was so well put together. You really got the sense that Shibuya was alive and it didn't just seem like a random battle field you were placed on. The utilization of the touch screen were phenominal. I loved all the ways you could attack. Slashing, tapping, pressing down, drawing circles etc.. It was all so fun. On top of that there were so many things to do and so many ways to progress yourself. Clothing, eating and of course just battling the baddies to gain more experience. The soundtrack was also suprsingly good and I heard songs that I didn't think I'd hear on a RPG. Then there were all the selection of pins you could use. There are so many pins and that gave so many oppurtunities to produce your own style of fighing. And like Jasonguy said, it wasn't just leveling up. You could level down for more of a reward. On top of all that there was a very great story to go along with it, filled with surprises and twists and a couple of genuinly funny dialogue sequences. At first Neku's attitude was a turn off because it seemed like something out of a high-school teen soap opera but he opens up and in the end it didn't feel like he was as cliche as he seemed to be. The characters were all deep and unique from each other. All had hopes and dreams and I think there was someone for everyone to relate to.

The World Ends with You is a game that we don't see very often and it gave me a reason to pick up my DS and feel like never putting it down. I'm the furthest thing you can find from a Squar-Enix fanboy and I already explained that I hate most of everything that this game is labeled but it's just a gem that I can't deny. It's the best DS game I've played and I pretty much venture out and look for all the supposedly hot titles; and this one of them all if my favorite and if anything, I think it's under-rated.

Believe me, I despise the Hot Topic crowd more than you can even imagine. The angst only lasts for two or three hours.

The game is amazing and original for it's gameplay and mechanics. It's ridiculously deep, flows perfectly, and oozes style. It's quite possibly one of the best RPGs I've ever played, and I've been playing RPGs for a long, long, time.

I'm on the fence about picking up this game, but I will tell you a few features I've seen that make this a pretty innovative title.

dual fighting system: using both the stylus and d-pad for 2 seperate fights.

use other ds features: like hanging around other players for xp.

style: ok the wacky japanese ghetto pop style isn't innovative (well over 5 years old now), but you can't tell me you're actually sick of it.

lastly the thing that makes this innovative IT'S NOT FINAL FANTASY!!!!

Personally I loath JRPGs but I'm seriously considering biting the bullet on this one.

I love when people say "it looks lame" or "ive seen people playing it, and I dont like it". I get a good laugh out of that.

I definitely think everybody should play the game. Rent it or something if its not your style. You may just find it has something to draw you in that isnt apparent from watching somebody play it. If you hate it after getting part of the way through, your out 5 bucks. Big woop. Chances are though, something will draw you in. Whether it be the creative pins, unique battle system, or engaging story.

O...over... rated? Umm... What DS game has come out in the last year that has been nearly as innovative, original, and fun! Kirby: Canvas Curse and... umm... a few other really shockingly innovative and good titles lined the first year or two of the DS, but then it went back to being a gameboy. This game was so spot on, it's unbelievable!

As much angst as Neku shows early on, it's not... the depth of his character. His relationships with the other players (especially Shiki) help provide strong insight into the varying values and views of other members of the same city. I may not be an angsty teenager, but I'm sure as hell a city-dweller, and I could instantly relate to Neku's attachment to his headphones (which weren't even pointed out until over halfway through the game). His character, and most others, save for the horrifically annoying Beat (and mind you, people DO actually talk like that, but I'd prefer not to see it in a video game), and the rest of the story of Shibuya are very well written. The dialouge may be lame, but the characters aren't.

Somebody made mention of Persona 3 earlier in this topic, I think... (it was over an hour ago I read it). I haven't played P3 yet, but I played the first two (err... the first one and the second half of the second one, since the first game called P2 never made it here), and I loved 'em. In fact, this game reminded me that Persona 3 is still out there, waiting for me to go through that too. The expanded version's down to $30 now, so I might just move from TWEWY to that afterwards... But with no uber-awesomeness of Persona on the DS, The World Ends With You just so happens to be one of the greatest RPGs/Stylus-driven games/handheld games/Squeenix games/etc. to come out in a LOOONG time, so to say a 9.0 or a feeling of instant cult classic status endowed upon it is... overrated... is just not enjoying this game for the greatness that it's worth.

But Front Mission 1st, Crystal Chronicles DS, Etrian Odyssey and Rocket slime are underrated so it all evens out. And all of those games are better than any RPG on the PSP (except the ports and Jean D'Arc)

Let me tell you a story.

Today, i was on a plane. A simple two hour flight. I played this game for the entire time.

Towards the end of the flight, we went through a storm. Lightning was outside. We were shaking quite heavily. We kept dropping every now and then. People were screaming a bit, some were just going "huh?" and there i was, sitting in my seat, headphones in listening to the awesome j-pop soundtrack and battling some noise. Sure, i knew that this turbulance was pretty bad, (not life threatining, but still pretty scary) but like i cared! I was too busy playing The World Ends With You.

I think this answers your question. No, it is not over-rated, it is one of the best rpg's i have played, and currently up there as one of the best games i have ever played.

This game is in no way overrated. I love it! I started to play it and it was a little slow. I thought, "Why is this game supposed to be great?" I got to the middle of Day 2 and I couldn't put my DS down (and that rarely happens!) and I had to keep playing. I'm on Day 5 right now, and I have to keep playing. Not to mention it has "Another Day" after you beat it, and great replayability to the entire game, due to added objectives and items.
