I don't, Anytime I have my wii off it has the red light, I don't know why you would unplug it from the wall, the red light means it is off. I can't see how you would be hurting it.

Nah, your wii won't be affected. But, I would advise using the power button just in case. I always leave mine in standby.

No it won't. In fact, most modern electronics (TVs, DVD players, Computers, etc) behave in the exact same way (they don't turn off completely)

i have my Wii plugged into a power strip but i called nintendo and they said leaving it on standby with the yellow light CANNOT HURT YOUR Wii. I asked this when I was sending my system in for repairs reguarding a drive noise that they fixed. i keep mine with the red light one. but whenever there is a storm or the power is going out i unplug the surge strip from the wall. i do this like almost once a week. (I love in Florida) anywho what I have happen to me is that whenever i take a disc out of my Wii i have a lil smudge on it. like it came from whatever is holding the Wii game in the Wii Console until i pull it out. Does this happen to anyone else?

It shouldn't break by unplugging it, that would be pretty lame on Nintendo's part if you thought about it. :P "Alright! we're moving to a new place!" -"but wait, I can't unplug my Wii, it'll break!" "hm... I guess we stay here then..." I leave mine off (red light) because I have no need for standby. Leaving the red light on or leaving it on standby is as safe as can be.

Ah, misunderstood. Well it's unlikely that it'll break it. Still, there's very little point.

Well see guys, there are 2 risks involved when leaving it in standby mode.

1. Somebody may accidently press the power button and the Wii may be left on all night.

2. If there is a power surge or the power to the house turns off, your Wii may completley break because it was left in standby mode when the surge happened.

Thats why I think its safer for me to just turn the power off, but I hope this is not slowly breaking my Wii.

how long have you had your wii and how long have been doing this? if it's been awhile then I would guess that it's not doing any damage to it. and if it's the weather you're worried about - causing surges - then you could just check your forecasts and unplug it before a storm instead of every time you play... hope that helps

I have my Wii plugged into a power strip as well. I have eleven total devices plugged into the strip, so I turn the whole power strip off every night to conserve a little energy. Like someone else said, most electronic devices still have power running through them even when they're "off." I've heard it described as the device "waiting" to be turned on, so it needs a little power at all times. Cutting off all power to them every night should conserve at least a little energy.

With that said, I'd say it's perfectly safe for you to switch off the power every time you use it. I've never had any problems whatsoever, and I've been turning it off every night since January.

I used to leave it on standby all the time when i had it upright, now that i turned it horizontal, i find in standby it heats up.. a LOT, and so i turned off the standby mode now. It's dumb that the fnas don't run in standby mode with the amount of heat that thing gives off.

If unpluging your Wii from the wall would break it, then the Designers of the system would have to be pretty stupid, huh? No unpluging your system will not break the Wii, If you think about it, your question is kind of silly.

I use a surge protector, and I turn the Wii off, with the remote. If you run the vacuum cleaner for five extra minutes you probably used more electricity than a turned-off Wii uses in a year.

The Wii will not be hurt by by having the power turned off (by unplugging or the switch on the wall). I would reccomend turning the system power off first though. But I have had my Wii on (in standby) since I got it at launch, and I have not had any problems with it at all (no over heating or anything close).

I read an article a while back.

Some people who have left their Wii's in standby mode connected to the internet via a wireless network have had their Wii's overheat to the point of damaging the GPU. It's rare and Nintendo will fix it or replace it for free if it happens, but if it has to be replaced you will not be refunded for your Virtual Console games.

I read someone state that if there is a power surge and your Wii is in standby while this happens then it will break. I have to say from experience that after a storm caused a power surge in my house, my Wii still works at 100% to this day, and the power outage occured back in January.

I'm pretty sure that this is a well built piece of hardware, I wouldn't worry too much about anything bad happening to this thing, unless someone legitimately does something to it.

Mine is never completely off. When I'm not playing the Wii, that little amber-coloured light is still on.
