I've been playing every Pokemon since I got blue version when I was younger but after falling asleep while playing Pokemon Pearl (that's a first) I felt like the series needs new direction. So I told myself to take a break from Pokemon but then I had to buy Heart gold.I played the game non stop but now I can't even play Pokemon White for 30 minutes. I really think the nostalgia really took me back and now that I'm over it I think the series is a little stale.

While Pokemon Black/White offered so great new additions it just felt like new icing on an old cake. I would like to see a major re-boot in the game-play department (I really don't think more Pokemon will help especially after seeing Trubbish).

Does anyone feel the same way?

Edit: made a poll

I have played since Red version, and yes it is.

I have high hype for every new gen. but if therewere to be a new gen now, i would care a bit less. still would, but less hype.

BTW, no need to hate on Trubbish. Every gen has its great and awful designs. ;)

aren't you a little late? people usually complain about how pokemon is still the same when the new games are released, not months after that.

There have been major additions to the Pokemon franchise since the GBA games.

The thing is that everyone's like "oh well you have to be like a hardcore Pokemon player to get the most out of them or even notice them"

Yeah and?

If you're not that into Pokemon why do you care what changes? It's like if a casual football fan says the sport is getting stale and then is asked what his favorite tam is and he says "one of the green ones"

If you think that Pokemon is getting stale it means you don't play enough of it to ask the question

Everyone feels that way when they see new pokemon, but once you play the game, you'll adapt to them. :)

The way Pokémon was designed, I have no idea how they could change it up.

Your basic goal is to battle and collect them all... what more is there really?

I love Pokémon, but eventually it's going to get repetitive. You just have to give it a rest a while and come back when you get a craving for Pokémon.

In my opinion Pokemon is the sort of game that should be upgraded, but not necessarily changed. Gamefreak agrees apparently. So I like it where it's at and would be very skeptical of any radical changes to the formula.

No not stale at all. I just picked up the DSi pokemon Black bundle for $144.00 @ kmart in norridge IL. to replace my old DSi. So that was like getting the DSi special edition black console for $110.00.

I spend less time after each gen. When nostalgia kicks in I go play for weeks on end, but then it dies out again. I haven't even gotten to the second Gym battle on Black and I'm not feeling too guilty about not accomplishing more.

I've technically been playing almost a year's worth of Pokemon White (started with the JP version then moved on to US), and I am getting a little bored of it for obvious reasons :P Pokemon thrills me every single Gen, no matter how similar the gameplay is. It's perfect the way it is right now.

I know what you mean, but for me, any staleness went away fifth generation because every Pokemon was new. However, I really wish that they would add some scaling option to make Gym Leaders and such match up to your Pokemons' levels so if I accidentally overtrain the Gym isn't a walk in the park. And there should be more decision-making allowed in the games, from who you help and from where you go. Not to mention, Unova was overly linear, so take that away GameFreak. From what I know about the Persona series (that's very little though), I wouldn't mind Pokemon being more like it.

After logging well over 500 hours in Diamond last gen, I was pretty pumped for the next generation. I got White, and I've run through it twice, and that's really it. I started getting things ready for competitive battling, and I just couldn't find myself to go through with it because there's just way too much that goes into getting even one good Pokemon sometimes that I've grown tired of the process.

Yeah, more like Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. A lot of adventuring but not pushing you to continue the story. (didn't feel like that at least). And maybe sidequests. That would be nice. Optional, and rewards for that. Your own house with furniture and maybe your own Pokemon Ranch. And while we're at it, able to go to every single Region and battle every single Gym and League. That would be cool. Every pokemon, and we will finally BE ABLE TO CATCH THEM ALL!

I feel the same way. I found D/P boring but HeartGold was my GOTY last year. Then comes B/W and they're worse than D/P. I really think it was nostalgia that made HeartGold so good for me, hearing some of those ****c songs and using all the old Pokemon was an amazing experiance. Unova just seems like such a boring region in comparison to Johto and Kanto, also the new Pokemon are disgraceful. Especially Samurott. I guess I've outgrown the series, only nostalgia keeps me interested. I'll look forward to a Ruby remake because I love that but after that I don't see myself playing Pokemon anymore, I'm 18.

The lack of interconnectnedness between games. It's basically you buy a game and then play to the end, trade, and battle. Repeat. What if you dont like the next game but want to battle people still. People want Pokemon for non-ending experience. Anyways I havent played since my junior year in high school or earlier. And I am way older now. So I dont care what they do. Its great for little kids who still like it.

I think if they made a 3DS pokemon it's differently going to greatly differ from previous one. I could imagine just running through Kanto region in 3D going to oaks office, and actually seeing oak. I would like it to be like Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness or Colleseum, but with a traditional pokemon region, and a more traditional story.

I don't think the games themselves are getting stale, Black and White is easily the best the series has ever been in terms of plot and gameplay, but other things like the top down 2D is getting old (though it is the norm for portable JRPG's, so I don't see it ever changing, at least not for Pokemon). The only thing that is really lacking is the creativity of the Pokemon themselves, a lot of the designs of the Pokemon this Gen where so overly complex in design that it ruined them, some of the Pokemon still looked good (e.g. Snivy) because they looked organic, but they are a very small minority, the other big problem is the names, a lot of the names made me wonder if they just sat a Monkey in front of a computer and let it hit random keys, that said I am now used to these new ones now and I accept them as Pokemon, but I doubt there are more than 5 5th Gen Pokemon I can say I like both the design and name of, and not much over more over that that I can honestly say I like one or the other of.

The problem with Pokemon is that usually all they add is 150 new pokemon on top of the old ones. There are some generations that don't add anything at all. I say Pokemon should be turned into an MMO, and should just be updated every once and a while, instead of releasing the same game (with slightly improved graphics) over and over again. Sadly I can't stop myself from buying each new game. I was once a fan, but then it became repetitive with each game.

Yes, the Pokemon designs lost their soul after about half way through D/P/Pt. There were maybe 5 or 6 good Pokemon families in B/W.

Gen 5 did everything right.

  • Zoomed in perspective, while keeping the tile based gameplay. (B/W is pixelated though, but I love the shift)
  • Introduced a PERFECT EXP-system which is a huge deal; basically it eliminates lvl grinding and also allows the devs to create more difficult battles since they can approx. predict what your level will be at any given time and adjust the difficulty accordingly. You can also swap out your current Pokémon and train new ones with ease.
  • HMs are now entirely optional, no more HM slaves.
  • Addition of mid-route healing spots -- you don't have to travel far to heal.

How is this stale?

Is the series formulaic? Yeah sure, most Nintendo games are, which I'm for. I want my 8-world/gym formula. The games differentiate through level design and such, I want them to keep their core structure, because it works. 2D Mario games to this day use the 8-world formula, since the original SMB 26 years ago for example. I want a new starting town, a new forest, a new ice cave, a new boat ride, a new elite 4 etc., you get the point, because I like this formula, what I don't like is change for the sake of it.

I do feel it's getting a little stale, but I have an image of so many things they could do in order to improve the entire experience and make it worth playing again. To start, they need to fix up their old mistakes and nuke about half of the pokemon that exist now. Then they need to make a lengthy story that is an important aspect of the game; I could see where it was meant to be in Pearl/Diamond onto Platinum but it lacked emphasis and depth. Then they need to make the system more complex, that's not to say it's not, what with IVs and EVs or whatever they're called, but it needs something to make the payer want to continue to play without having to be motivated by level 100. And they've proven that they can imprve the game aesthetically too, so hopefully the next actual one in the series will feel fresh.

on the other hand the world became literally linear and while HM slaves are annoying, i feel that no HMs at all made them pointless. what could be a nice fix would be the so-called "hidden" moves not necessarily take one of your four attack slots. having, say, Cut as a battle move would be optional. that way HMs are still useful and relevant and you don't have to destroy your pokemon for them. plus... nobody ever thought that it was weird that birds can only fly and fish can only swim after you give them a CD?

I'm 22 and have been playing pokemon since Gold. I have played throught every generation since and have loved each and every pokemon game to pieces. I never enjoyed the "story" modes though. I always just wanted to get those over with so that I could get to the main draw of the series: exploring for, catching, and training pokemon. Pokemon Black actually had a good story mode and the best features to date. It also felt great that every single pokemon that appeared before the credits rolled were brand new. It brought back that sence of absolute wonder the series used to give me as a kid.

Whatever it is, Pokemon has not lost its luster for me. The changes are there, but only casual pokemon players cannot detect them.

Pokemon Gold/Silver, Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, and Pokemon Diamond/Pearl have all made monumental changes to the series' battle sceneIMO. And I mean HUGE! Each time things got more complex
