Does anyone else thinks the newer Pokemon games are dull and repetitive?!

Yep, topic says it all. Got at least one of the major Pokemon games of every generation so far but for me the newer games (Ruby and so on) lost the Pokemon "feeling" for me. I don't even finished Pokemon Diamond because it's just not interesting. Maybe I'm just not the age for Pokemon games anymore (19) but otherwise I'm totally eager to see HeartGold and SoulSilver because I think those will give me this old feeling back. Do other people think so too? Or am I just not a normal Pokemon fan anymore?

Maybe for the single player. However, the things you do online and offline, like breeding, battling, trading, and trading seems to me to be much deeper. There is so much to do. If the gameplay couldn't be ruined by Action Replay (meaning that if other people couldn't cheat), and if I had more time, I might have gone into that stuff.

Sure, the online feature seems to be very nice but since I never came so far I missed it until now. I guess I try it when I got SoulSilver.

i see alot of these posts here, and i think most of it has to do with the nostalgia you feel for the earlier games. i've never put as much time into a pokemon game, or enjoyed it as much as i have this 4th generation. and thats saying quite a bit, as i've played every gen at least twice. the story is more interesting than in previous games (team galactic seems to have a better story than teamrocket or magma/aqua) and the online battling is obviously a huge plus. contrary to most people, i actually like the newer pokemon more as well. when they ran out of animals to make variations of (ratacate, seal, ect) they started making more interesting pokemon (metagross and drapion, to name a couple.)

short answer: no, i like the new games more.

Hm, the first two generations I bought both games (and Yellow) but for me Smaragd and Ruby would be the worst out of all of them. I have to admit that I like the new style of D/P but as you say they ran out of animals which isn't so bad, but I really don't like the three new starters. In the first to generations the pokemon hadn't all those dots on the like this 3rd evolution of the penguin. Because of the tech they got with the classic GameBoy I guess they couldn't make Pokemon like the newer ones which are for me what I call "overdesigned". Pokemons are still something like stylized animals which battle. And I also don't like those 10 or how many there are legendary Pokemon in this generation.

There's no age limit on enjoyment. If you don't like the newer games, you probably won't like HeartGold and SoulSilver either, it's not like the pokemon formula changes much. Well, maybe the story, but who actually cares for the exact same story from Blue?

I've played pearl and Diamond and I've also played Gold and Silver...and i have to say, Gold and Silver feel more like a Pokemon game. Pearl and Diamond are still really fun games, but the older ones have more of that classic Pokemon feel.

Exactly, the newer ones are superior to the old ones

It's just nostalgia speaking, people always think that it was better in the "good ol'days" when it really isn't

Pokemon is stronger then it's ever been and the reason for it is because the games are the strongest they've ever been

The games do get better, and they're not bad by any means, but pokemon should be roughly 4x more evolved than it is now, they've been milking the gameboy/DS games far too long without adding enough content. Anyone who disagrees with that has a lot to learn about game design.

You should really take your own advice

The game is meant to be started by children in the early single digits. If you "evolve" the game radically (which is what you're asking for some unknown reason) you exclude a large portion of newcomers.

The entire franchise changed when it came to the DS and no one pays attention to it. It made the game have tremendous depth while at the same time held it's roots in place allowing small children to pick up and play

The idea that it hasn't "evolved" enough is false

Absolutely agree with you 100% on that.

Pokemon got stale with Ruby/Sapphire. I tried to play Platinum awhile ago and couldn't get into it at all. It just felt like I was playing the last three games all over again, except with a new character, new pokemon, and a new world. In other words, nothing changed except for cosmetics. From what I hear some things did get deeper (such as breeding), but those things only matter to the hardcore pokefanatics. The average player isn't going to spend hours breeding and raising the perfect pokemon for example.

I also think it's rather pathetic that the franchise has yet to make the transition to 3D. All the console games have been lame, shallow fighting games. The only good entries in the series have been 2D handheld games which was understandable with the last iterations, but on the DS all they could manage were some minor graphics upgrades (ooh look, the houses are psuedo-3D!). And for crying out loud, why is it that every pokemon game has used the same MIDI sound effects for the pokemon cries? On the GB, GBC, and GBA this was understandable, but on the N64, NDS, and GCN? Come on.

Kind of. Maybe it is just nostalgia, but I bought Diamond a few weeks ago, and started a new game after a couple of weeks, but I grew bored.

With the first two generations, I was able to keep starting over and enjoy it just the same.

Technically speaking, Diamond/Pearl are the best, but I can't wait for HeartGold and SoulSilver, which should technically be the best and will have the best gameplay.

Yeah the story just isnt exciting in Gen 4, just felt like a grind. Gen 2 story blows all other pokemon games out of the water. Traveling between regions, 16 badges, and a showdown with Red. It was epic. Lookin forward to HG/SS.

Well, if you've been playing pokemon for a decade I can see that things would get a little repetitive.. Nintendo sticks to the moto "If it ain't broke don't fix it" ... at least for main series pokemon games that is.

A little bit, but there still good games, just not as good as the originals. Have to say the thing that had me most annoyed while playing Platinum was the way the game held your hand the whole way through. Literally after you finished one area of the game, a random person like Cynthia, your rival etc would come up to you and give you a really obvious hint of where to go next. Compare this to the older games like Red and Blue where you had to find the HM surf in the deepest, darkest part of the safari zone without any hints...

Sorry for not posting so long but it was night in Europe :P I don't deny that D/P are yet the best Pokemon games out there but for me, may it be nostalgia or not, the newer games got no soul. I don't like most of the newer Pokemon. Team Galactic is more of a joke for me. So I hope that SS/HG take the heart and sould (;)) of the original games and all the new gameplay aspects of D/P.

if you meant to say best story, then i could possibly agree though. the_wet_mop

I thought the story was terrible in the latest Pokemon games. The absolutely absurd focus on mysticism and making Pokemon actual dieties within the game ruined it for me,and Team Galactic's goal of "creating a new universe!" was laughable. This is a problem I had with Ruby/Sapphire,with making some Pokemon practically gods, but the latest batch took it to a new level.I liked the simple,down-to-earth feeling of the first two generations. While the second generation might have bumped up the significance of legendary Pokemon a bit, there was nothing that felt over-the-top or out-of-place.

I think it's good that there are more legendarys in the main story. In FR ad LG, it was all fine with team rocket and all that, but there was no real story. all u know is that team rocket r bad for some reason, and u have to stop them. with D/P/Pt, you've got a maniac trying to destroy the world with, mythical creatures. there is actually a good reason to stop them. also, they r stronger and have more pkmn, also they have 3/4commanders, then 1 boss. R/S/E were good as well, as if u stop the sea would expand/dissapear(once again, a good reason to stop them.)Also, the distorsion world was great.

i can see where you're coming from. team rocket in RBY had very little effect on the world/the game story. in DPPt, team glactic and its diety pokemon have a huge effect on the world. the downside to the latter is that it does seem over the top. IMO RSE had the best story. i felt like i was actually making a difference by stopping magma or aqua, but it wasnt just another "someone/thing is going to destroy the world" game.

Sorry if my post isn't with the current discussion amongst you all. Made this account today. The Pokemon games have lost its touch. When I was younger I refered to play Pokemon. Yet now Pokemon has become repetitive. Only the names of the group that wants to take over, there plan, the location, the pokemon, etc change. Though the details of the environment and so on have improved...... it feels like a building that is fixed every few years. The same foundation yet with more floors. I would still enjoy playing the games because of the freedom of what Pokemon you can choose, the many attacks, and hundreds, if not thousands, of strategies that can be used. I hope to see the next Pokemon game in the near future. (Sorry for any spelling errors)

Yes, barely finished Platinum. I've been playing since Pokemon Blue back in 1998 so the franchise is really growing thin for me. My last Pokemon games are going to be Heart Gold and Soul Silver since they were my favorite of the franchise and I want to retire from Pokemon on a good note.

They are dull but they are fun to play, in the first series/generation of pokemon you could actuly remember all the pokemon but now if you have just started Diamond,Pearl or Platnum you dont know what the pokemon are like Starly is a cheap imatatin of pidgey and im sure you will find more cheap and copyed pokemon if you look hard enough. Chimchar and charmander, so they are bacicly more exciting pokemon to fight with and look at(if you know what i mean), but they just rip of the origanal verson of pokemon. So yes, i think it is dull, but it its fun to play and explore.

Yup, it sure is. And all that breeding for pokes, ev training, and finding good players to battle with (Serebii Wifi Chat is awful to fight people on) was too much of a hassle. I just play Shoddybattle now, which is the good part of pokemon without wasting a 100 hours to breed and train the right team.

In my opinion Pokemon games aren't dull or repetetive, they just follow the same formula with slight changes, and different story lines( though the story never significantly changes). Nintendo or whomever makes the Pokemon games needs to be a bit more creative in their approach to new pokemon games though. Pokemon Dash is a prime example of dull, and repetetive, though all the other Pokemon games I've played have been addicting at times. Maybe the day will come when they add aditional game mechanics, such as being able to dodge attacks, or use pokemon's individual abilites to progress through the region.

How exactly is what you just said not indicative of a repetitve franchise? No one is saying the gameplay in each individual game is repetitive. We're saying that the series has gotten to the point where every new gen of games is just repeating what came before except with minor changes.
