I mean, take a look at the DS Lite. Its simple, because it provides 2D or 3D gameplay. For the most part, so does the DSi and DSXL.

Now, they are saying this new thing, the 3DS, if you look at it, it will look like you are looking at it in the 3D dimensional sense, kind of like your looking into a fishbowl.

Are you guys going to miss the DS lite? And do you think Nintendo, as innovative as they are, are taking it a step too far? We just want to game for Gods sakes! We don't necessarily want something that is going to make me 0-o.

Any thoughts?

The DS lite ain't going anywhere ;) I think they are taking a step forward, just like when the DS came out, the innovation was it's touch screen, now they are offering this new technology: the 3D, and we still don't know what other features they'll add to it. That's life, they all have their life cycle, the DS is coming to an end, but the 3DS is coming :)

I couldn't care less about 3D to be honest...i have yet to see how it can be more then a gimmick then the oft quoted herald of great new innovative mechanics

Nintendo doesn't screw up its major platforms. So I think the 3DS will be great.

I'm pretty sure the 3DS will still play games in 2D just like the DS Lite. Surely there's an option to disable/not use the 3D graphic and stick to traditional 2D, right?

Nintendo for whatever technology they bring to the table have not used untested technology in an age. Even with the DS and the Wii the technology itself was sound and pretty much risk-free. Nintendo simply doesn't take big chances these days.

I guess if they add that option, then you make much sense. Yes. Good post.

It's only a hunch but Nintendo won't give up on 2D gaming so quickly like that. I think the 3DS is supposed to be enjoying the benefits of both dimensions working together.

........... 3D isn't always used to throw stuff in your face. it helps creating a HUGE sense of depth that even 2D (2D, not 2.5D) games could benefit. imagine tons of layers of background and "foreground"... imagine an even better-looking muramasa.

They DID say it would be backwards compatible, so there should be the normal 2D for at least DS/DSi games.

Yeah, i agree to I don't like the whole 3d move they're doing. I think they might be a bit ahead of themselfs, like we're movine a bit too fast in the future or something. Then again you never know Nintendo might surprize us big time.

You're right! I forgot about that. It will definitely be playable in 2D then.

3D = Gimmicky & Lame ... However people were saying the same thing about the DS before its release... so, I'm hoping Nintendo surprises us all and releases something really great. But we'll just have to wait for e3.

There is a problem with the above examples of the Wii and DS though. Although the technology was solid very few people would say that the Wii or DS have given us a great library that only could have been done on those platforms. One of the Wii's biggest games Smash Bros is actually better played without the Wii's major selling point: the remote. The same is true of the DS with NSMB. Even great DS titles that capitalise well on the touchscreen and other featuers often leave you with a lingering sense of "well, this works reallly well....but traditional controls could have worked equally well if not better"-Phantom Hourglass is an example of that. Where I worry is on the software front. Developers rushed into the Wii and DS and created a load of B rate trash in the midst of trying to figure out just what to do with the new functions of the respective systems, and tbh to this day it still doesn't feel like developers have really quite figured out what to do with them (Nintendo included).

Don't worry, 3D is gonna work on a handheld. The thing is some games are probably gonna missuse it just like the huge load of shovelware on Wii, but the main games, that will benefit from it, will handle it perfectly, I think.

It's not gonna be the new way of playing games, like the stylus, but just an addition, also that's why they're adding these small things like accelerometer and rumble to compensate for that.

I think the 3DS will set a new standard for handheld gaming, and I am pretty sure this new pokemon game is still only a DS game and not a 3DS game. By now, Pokemon should have much better graphics than it does, but Gamefreak is just hella lazy.
