I tend to move around a lot (lived in the US and UK the last two years) and am currently in Mexico City and games from all 3 are fine with my US DS. Also my DSi connects with the US DSi shop wherever I am. I guess cost and possibly the content of the DSi Shop are the only reasons to consider importing - you can just import games from Japan if you want and pay them on the DS you already have. Be careful with voltage though! Nothing worse (I imagine) than having your beloved new DS blow up on you
There's nothing significantly different about an imported DS. Some colors may be different (I have an Enamel Navy DS Lite, and a Green DSi, both from Japan). They are all region free, which means they'll play games from any country. The one thing I'll have to warn you is that the Japanese DSi's only have Japanese has the system language (unless they've changed it recently?)
I think you can't play dsiware from other countries. There's nothing significantly different about an imported DS. So all DS's are region free hmm... interesting. I think I'm gonna import a DS. Thanks for the replies.

Using a local lead is also an option. A Japanese model will take the plug made for the UK models without issue and vice versa. The DSL is quite versatile like that.my little nephew has an euro ds and it plays all my "american" games so I guess its not big deal, the only real difference is the voltage but it just needs an adapter..
