I watched the IGN review and it really feels like the core of what made Paper Mario, Paper Mario, is now gone. The collecting of the teammates, the FP/BP, the view, the RPG quality... so if I really LOVED Paper Mario and 1000 Year Door for just what they were, will I still have fun with Super Paper Mario?

Now, it has been a while since I have played SPM, but to simply answer your question, it does not feel completely the same. However, to answer your other question, you will enjoy it. While the battling is different, the gameplay is mostly the same. The graphics and puzzles are very similar to the first two games. The most important similarity is the story telling. This aspect of the game has not changed and feels very familiar. If I remember correctly I liked Thousand-Year Door better, but that by no means means SPM is a bad game. It's great and I love every minute of it! I would recommend it.

You'll enjoy the game, but one its own merits only. Its far different from the first two games in the series, which is a shame considering I loved the first one and never got to play the second

The only thing that is different about it is it's gameplay, which to some, is bad. But everything else is there, such as the paper theme, the usual Mario characters (Bowser, Peach, Luigi) the charm of Paper Mario games, all the colors, the great music.

I liked the game alot, myself

FEEL like a Paper Mario?

Lol, if you think that all Paper Marios are RPGs then sure it doesn't feel like it, that's why it's not considered an RPG.

If you just think that the Paper Marios games are great games with a Paper artstyle and great dialogue, then it does feel like a Paper Mario.

All subjective.

Its not an RPG, but other than that its the same feel. So yes it feels different, but its fun. Now if Square will make Super Mario RPG 2

I'll try and be more helpful than those who revert to the useless 'all subjective' cop-out. This approach to answering your question is a result from fear of expressing a view. There are some facts that we can talk about that will give you a better idea. The original Paper Mario and TTYD were similar in their levelling systems, collection of teammates, presentation, control schemes, artistics style and Chapter structure. They were also similar in their dialogue, and featured the RPG elements you mentioned, but were so rudely dismissed on. Super Paper Mario is very different. It has no turn-based gameplay, it has automatic-levelling, it has four characters to use as your principle, and it does not have the same Mushroom Kingdom feel as the first two. TTYD is more similar to Paper Mario than Super Paper Mario is similar to the TTYD. It is more like a re-boot of the series. I thought it was silly, and I have posted a review about it here: http://au.gamespot.com/wii/rpg/superpapermario/player_review.html?id=518383&tag=contributions;review18

The most fun you'll have with SPM is laughing at the dialogue. It can be pretty hilarious.... but there's way too much of it most of the time. It's like eating too much cake....

The gameplay itself is really disappointing. The platforming isn't interesting enough to make that part much fun, and the RPG elements are stripped so much that that part isn't much fun either. Flipping between 2D and 3D is kind of fun at first, but it REALLY wore on me after only a little while. I got tired of checking the third dimension in every room just to make sure I didn't miss anything, and most of the time, there wasn't anything to see.

You might have fun with it.... It's not terrible at all, but it definitely feels lackluster compared to the other Paper Mario games. They mixed two genres and ended up watering both of them down to a pretty bland level.

It doesn't feel ANYTHING CLOSE to Paper Mario. I think the game's about 1/100 of Paper Mario's greatness. It's an ok game, but I would have been much happier if it didn't have Paper Mario in the title or had a Paper Mario art style. Now I'm forced to associate that game with the Paper Mario series...

Yeah, it didn't to me. The game was a little dull in my opinion. I wish it had been more like original Paper Mario.

Long answer: No, it doesn't.

The relationship between the RPG and platforming is flip-flopped, but you'll definitely be able to distinguish the game as an installment in the Paper Mario series. If you try to look at the game with the RPG gameplay as the main focus, much like the first two games in the series, you're likely going to be disappointed in the fact that it really isn't an RPG. However, if you go into the game realizing that it's a platformer this time around with a few light RPG elements, you can still get plenty of enjoyment out of it and the things Super Paper Mario provides.

The best I can really sum it all up is this way; whereas the first two games are probably 80% RPG and 20% platformer from a gameplay perspective, give or take some of the percentage there, Super Paper Mario's 80% platformer and 20% RPG. That being said, the game's atmosphere will make you feel right at home if you're a Paper Mario fan in general.

Super Paper Mario was a very unique game. People always tell Nintendo to experiment more with their franchises and I see the hybrid platforming/RPG as a major depature.

But honestly as good as SPM was I would not want the next game to be like it. I would want a return to the RPG focused design.

I think its a brilliant game thats criminally underated. Plus the '2D to 3D' feature is awesome.

Its an okay game but not one I would play again. The things I hate are the difficultly and that fact it ditches turn based battles. I played it once and never touched it since.

Well, they're both made out of paper, so I assume they feel the same.

Eh, I doubt it. Like you said, Super Paper Mario is nothing like its predecessors; if you liked the first and second games because they were RPG's, I don't think it would be safe to put your bets on Super Paper Mario. It's still a good game, though, so it's still worth a rent at the very least.

It should not be a safe bet, that sequals like that will be carbon copies of their predecessors with better graphics. The game mixes it up but still retains many great featyures of the series as a whole. If Nintendo went that direction permanantly I would be dissappointed but SPM is a really good game and is way more deep than given credit.

Super Paper Mario is indeed very different, but the great sense of humor that made the previous Paper Mario games so great is still there. But yes, the RPG element is gone almost completely (except for being able to upgrade your abilities and some other things), so the gameplay feels a lot less deep. It's still highly enjoyable, though, as it is just a really good 2D platformer and one of the funniest, best written games I've ever played.

That being said, Super Paper Mario is my least favourite Paper Mario game, but I still love it. I'm a huge fan of the series, and I'd say that if you loved Paper Mario on the N64 and the GC, you're going to at least like this.
