No it has 512 mb internal flash memory (like a huge-ass internal memory card), more than enough for game saves and a very large handful of VC downloads.
I heard this card works for the Wii as a memory card also, ( I have the card, but I don't get my Wii til Sunday), thats if you feel you are gonna download a huge amount of games from VC and stuff. Other than that it sounds like the 512MB card is more than enough from what I have read on these forums and other places on the net. Plus I believe once you buy a game once from VC, and even if you wipe it from your card, you still ahve the ability to download it again multiple times, after you ahve payed for it once. Here is the link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134080 Its cheap, and comes with a usb reader/changer/hookup thingy, so its good for lots of stuff.
That card your talking about is called an SD card. You can get them anywhere for really cheap in almost any size. They are also used in non-Sony digital cameras.

Yup...solid state memory. It's actually faster than a hard drive, and it takes up less space with lower power consumption.
No, it instead uses flash memory. My advice is "get used to it," as you will see hard drives being phased out and solid state memory instead being used.
