Your money should not be taken by Nintendo, since Visa and Mastercard is the only cards their service should recognize. Either nothing happens, or you get a message saying that your card information is invalid or something.
After you hit ok it depends if your wireless is encrypted or not, if it is then you get your points right away and you are charged that ammount by nintendo, if your network is not then the same thing happens but during the transaction the sleezy guy sitting in his car down the road copys your Debit card info and goes on a shopping spree. Of course you can be safe by only having the exact price of the points in your account so when the dude emptys it its already empty!
