Donkey Kong: Good or bad?

Is donkey kong a good guy or a bad guy? Cuz I remember in the first Donkey Kong he was bad and throwing barrells and such at Mario so he couldn't save the Christmas.. then awhile ago I remember I rented a DK game for N64 and he came off as a good guy? So what I've been dying to know is Donkey Kong a good guy or a bad guy?

I believe, and this is roughly from memory, that Cranky Kong (from DKC) was the original Donkey Kong that used to throw barrels and the such. The current DK from DKC is a hero to his family and all that, fighting K. Rool. However, I can't really say between Mario and Donkey Kong.

See... DK would try to hit Mario with those barrels and stuff, which is kinda mean. But Mario tried to beat the **** out of a BABY CHIMP in Donkey Kong Junior, when the DK Jr. Was trying to save his pop-pop.

So in the end... I don't really know.

I think he's more of a good guy then Wario and less of a good guy then Mario.

He's one of those characters that's just himself. Sometimes he does things that aren't the prototypical hero like stealing Pauline and other times he's the out and out hero like in the DK country series.

I think he's into his own interests. Like he's not going to travel to the Mushroom Kingdom anytime soon the next time the Princess is kidnapped but if someone threatens the Donkey Kong Country (whatever it is) he'll play the hero.

He's like another nation in the Nintendo universe and really doesn't fall into a good/bad role, it's all about the scenario. Unlike others like Mario who just does the hero thing wherever.

I guess that's how I'll look at DK from now on.

I think he's more of a good guy than a bad guy though, he hasn't really appeard as someone bad since NES (correct me if I'm wrong).

I mean in his second outing (DK Jr) he was a sympathetic character being locked up by Mario.
