I don't know what to say. Are developers taking these microtransactions too far?

Upcoming DS title Dragon Quest IX has Wi-Fi. A new Weekly Jump scan shows it'll be used for in-game internet shopping and extra quests.

Your internet shopping guide is Roxanne, and she'll show you merchandise that is updated daily. There are rare items, discount items and even special holiday items available to buy.

Square Enix also plans to release new quests through the DS's internet shopping every week.

I don't like this. It looks like Square-Enix is really going to milk this thing. I mean, I love the DQ series but for some reason, this doesn't sit right with me. My anticipation for this game went down a notch.

Your thoughts.

Microsanctions are well known rip-off schemes to make extra money. Although the concept is innocent, it'll be abused. I'm still pretty hyped for DQ9, but i'll read a few reviews and find out how long the main game is first. If its long enough, then i'll determine whether or not its worth paying for the extra content.

I hope this doesn't turn out like all those crappy free MMOs where you have to pay for all the cool stuff.

Yeah, that's the worse thing ever. It's higly probably that they will do this here too, no point in making a shop like this if you don't put the coolest stuff there. For those who doesn't want to buy... well... luck and skill shall take you far enough. hehe. My only hope is that they don't get the stupid idea to sell "keys" to unlock certain quests which you can only acess by buying those "keys".

Is this dlc for the ds or the dsi? Because if it is for the ds than the dlc would be free since you cannot pay for dlc on the ds or ds lite.

The article doesn't specifically say that the content has to be bought with real money, it could be the same in-game money transactions like the new DS re-make of the original Fire Emblem as shown here. You can purchase new things from the internet shop using game currency, not real money.

Fire Emblem is the exception, not the rule. Look at Maple Story - free to play, but not to look like everyone else. Soon the day will arrive when the "special ending" is DLC and by special I mean worthwhile.

All I am saying is this might be the case with DQIX as well. Let's hope so.
