Of course it's not for sure, and no, Nintendo doesn't need a new portable or a redesign for a good holiday lineup, overall or for the DS; they could announce a bunch of great new games that we've all waited for instead of a new / redesigned DS.
I see a new Nintendo handheld relatively soon, but certainly not of the Game Boy brand; I loved it (I still play my SP), but let's face it, it's dead.
We all know that at E3 08 that Nintendo is going to release a new handheld device at E3 but will it be a new DS or a completely new device?MajorNelsonJR
Announcement of new DS that isn't a redesign would be very suprising since analysts have said the sales of the DS have just recently peaked.
I like your taste and I am so confident because they haven't released onme for along time and I thing they are
"According to Bloomberg Japan, Enterbrain (Famitsu's parent company) honcho Hirokazu Hamamura has said that Nintendo might unveil a new DS model at E3 2008. While Ash is asleep and our Google Translate only takes us so far, there doesn't appear to be any other information of note other than Nintendo declining to comment on the rumor. Since it took about two years for the DS to become the DS Lite, the timeline for the DS Lite to become the DS Liter seems right on track. What would you like to see in the updated handheld if Hamamura's prediction comes to fruition?" --->http://kotaku.com/378755/new-ds-coming-to-e3-2008
"We cannot comment on the specifics of what will be announced at E3, but at the very least there won't be anything like what Mr. Hamamura suggested, so would like to clearly deny this," said a Nintendo spokesperson. "We're having a hard time understanding what kind of evidence [Mr. Hamamura] had for saying this." ---> http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/04/16/nintendo_no_new_ds_at_e3/1
So Nintendo basically denied a 'new' DS at E3 2008. This doesn't mean they won't 'upgrade' the current one though. And by 'upgrade' I mean like they did going from GBA to the GBA SP, Micro and the DS fat to the DS Lite. I can definately see something like that happening since its been 2 years out for the Lite.

The micro came out while the DS was already on the market.
nintendo is not releasing a new hand held this e3 you only think so because its been 4 years but never in there industry has a handheld done so well and they plan to use the ds as long as wii is around and another wii isnt coming till 2012 so you can be assured a new ds wont apear till 2011-2012Hellmetal789
I can guarantee you the DS's successor will launch before the Wii's.
The only Nintendo handheld that lasted that long was the original Game Boy, but I doubt the DS would last as long.
it would be too sudden and it would piss off the many people who just got a ds lite. They would either need to wait till sales slow down significantly or take off 50 dollars or somethin 1 year in advance.typeRseries
It wouldn't be too sudden. The DS lite came out less than two years after the original DS, and it's been over two years since the DS Lite.

If you like your games, hang on to them. The next 'DS' system will most likely either still use the 'DS' game carts, or at the very least will be able to play them.
Well, I'm kinda neutral (I do, of course, want a new model to be introduced!), I loved the GBA (it had amazing games, and still does), but it's time is up (I mean, they're not gonna make any more games for it), I think the GBA should be left as it is because it was a WONDERFUL handheld and will be remembered for a long time. I think that if they release a new DS model they're going to remove the GBA slot to make space/room for more updates/upgrades (bigger screen, better graphics, etc.), besides that I don't know what else they MIGHT change for the DS (I love the current model, the DS Lite is fantastic in my opinion).
The only thing we can do is hope and see how Nintendo will surprise us next, I trust them completely because when it comes to handhelds, consoles, or video games, Nintendo staff members (engineers and etc.) don't waste their time, they look into every aspect of what users/players like us would find ideal for a handheld or console, all their consoles and handhelds have been great, and I trust that they will (IF they do) a handheld worth spending my money on.
Sincerely:
-V
