I'm pretty sure it was announced. It's on the nintendo wii wikipedia site with 50+ citations, so i'm assuming it was announced.

The whole bit about wii and ds interactivity comes from a Nintendo conferance held in Japan ages. It was the conferance where Pokemon Battle Revolution was first shown.
