on an episode of the Hotspot someone mentioned that regular DS games look a little strange when played on the 3DS. Sort of like playing a standard definition game on a HD television.

Is that true ? If I want to play a regular DS game then should I avoid using a 3DS ?

They look better on the DS. Upscaled looks a bit odd. Little blurry, too much white, not enough contrast due to upscaling. Upside is the stick works wonderfully.

They just look a bit grainy than they would on a DS.

Though I've only really noticed it a lot with Pokemon Black. The other games I've used (Rhythm Heaven, Mario vs Donkey Kong: Mini-land Mayhem, Dragon Quest IX) all look fine.

I have heard that the update helped improve that, more so for 3D games were its sharper and clear and text is easier to read.

DS games looks exactly the same. I've played Etrian Odyssey 3 before and after the estore update and it looks the same The emulation isn't bad, but the lite and XL do a better job of it.

It's only certain games it effects and it different ways, from what I heard its more for 3D games than 2D.

Etrian Odyssey is 3D. No difference. Though I've mostly been playing Phoenix Wright on it. The update didn't touch DS game emulation. Its not terrible, kind of like playing PS1 games on a PSP.

*Edit - I've jumped back and forth several times on EO3. I think I notice some slightly better contrast and clearer text. I can totally tell the difference between my DSiXL still (I turned filtering off on Disgaea 3 cause I preferred to see the pixel edges after all) but it is totally tolerable. White level is still way too high (I think its just the upscaling), but text is clear and colors look right. Not like they were bad before, the (tiny) difference still might just be a placebo affect for me.

As I said it doesnt effect them all and only in certain ways.

The big problem is I can't jump pre and post update. It wasn't awful before, just a bit washed out color-wise. Colors may be marginally better now, but the difference is so tiny that it could be me seeing things.

Grainy, chunky, washed out, and generally hideous. The only alternative is to play with the screen at native res, which is about the size of an international postage stamp. Basically, if you want to play DS games, play them on a DS (DSi has the best screen and size tradeoff of the various models).

It's upscaled and a little blurred but it isn't as hideous/horrible/horrendous as some picky people here say. It's like when you resize a lowres image in Power Point

The 3DS has backwards compatibility, so it is able to play DS games. However, there will be no 3D effect for the games. Also, note that this does not work the other way around -- a regular DS (or any of its refurbishments, like the DSi) will not be able to play a 3DS game.

I see and improvement on Pokemon Black from the recent update, I swear it's not as pixelated as it was before... It looks smoother now.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I will most likely purchase a DSi XL, and use that model with the extra large screen to play regular DS games.

Meh. I've played quite a few of my old DS games(Ninja Gaiden, LotR: Conquest, SMB64, Glory Days 2, Contra 4, Bangai-O Spirits- the list goes on), and I still don't understand what everyone is complaining about- sure they look a little choppier than they did on DS, but they still play the same(better in some cases, due to the C-pad), and isn't that supposed to be the most important thing?

That's exactly what happens...

Anyway, how do you play Gold at all? Do you mean Heart Gold?

I see barely any difference unless your playing Pokemon black/white. My other games look the same or better even ( Final Fantasy's, Metroid )
