My wife is the director of a children's emergency shelter. All the kids there got DS lites for Christmas. They have now discovered how to send text messages to each other and are using this method to create all kinds of problems for the staff. Is there any way to disable or block their ability to send text messages to others? This sounds innocent but in this case it is far from it. They are using it to intimidate and send vulgar messages to others. Please help, we don't want to have to take away their ability to amuse themselves.

if they are doing it using the picto chat feature, you could keep them in a far enough range where it wont connect to another ds. i forget the exact space limitation, but i know they have to be kind of close for them to be able to use that.

There's really no way to lock that feature and it works up to 300 feet so unless you spread them around in a huge field they can still chat. She could have someone walk around and check DSs to make sure kids are playing games and not sending messages. Or just tell the kids they can just not use it if it is upsetting them. If they could ge their hands on some gold mesh they coud build little boxes of it for the kids to sit in. In case you didn't know, gold mesh blocks all electronic signals.

you can try to explain them that what they are doing is bad or maybe the kids that feel ofended by those words could try not to join the Chat Room cause you can always decide whether to join the room or not.

No there's no way. Only thing i can suggest is get a adult with a ds to periodically check if there is anyone connecting to chat rooms. If they realise that someone is playing there own game so to speak to catch them out they may find it less appealing.

This is probably the best suggestion.

Yes, after reading all the posts, this seems like the best idea. Also, I'm not sure if this will work, but you can have one of the adults have a Ds of their own. They can turn on their Ds's and check the chat rooms every minute or so, to see if there are any chat rooms, with kids on them, when selecting the pictochat option. If there are, then you know that the kids are using the chat rooms.
