I had the original ds and no scratches. Had that thing for five years. The hinge broke and the screen broke but no scratches. I don't even use a screen protector on my psp go. But I do use a crystal case and reccomend that. I got the dsi xl too btw!
They are pretty resistant to scratches, honestly i'm more worried about messing up the gorgeous looking glossy top, having said that i am waiting on my screen protector order to get here from amazon. A little extra protection never hurt and the larger screen leaves more surface for something to go wrong i suppose.
I always try to get a screen protector for my DS's. I've been having horrible luck with sharp edged styli over the years. DS Lite styli scratched my screen and sister's and DSi also had a sharp bit; Thankfully DSi and sister's Lite had screen protectors but my Lite had a big ugly scratch on it :(
