I know Nintendo consoles tend to be VERY durable but im curious to know the durability of the DS. Have you ever dropped or have it dropped by a younger sibling, or left it in very high or low temperatures, or maybe spill some liquid on it?

Well I bought a DS when it first came out and the left hinge is now cracked. I've never dropped my DS and its never been abused in anyway so I was surprised to find the crack. Other people have had this problem though so I'm not totally surprised. As far as I can tell, the crack seems to be cosmetic because the structrual integrity doesn't seem to be compromised.

Other than this, I've never heard of others having problems with their DS devices unless they blatantly abused them. The new DS systems might have a better made hinge as well as I'm sure Nintendo is aware of the problem, and to their credit this only recently happened after owning the system since launch which is almost 2 years now.

So in short, the DS us durable, don't worry about it.

i've done everything but spill liquid on it, the most it will do in cold or hot temperatures is drain the battery. droping it may scratch it a bit and dent it if your unlucky.

its a bloody little tank

It feels pretty sensitive, so my guess it would break pretty easily, unlike the old gba.

The DS is alright, but not the strongest. The hinges do seem to crack easily, my mate's broke after a month or two.
The DS Lite, however, is tough. I've had mine for ages and it has barely even got a scratch.

I take perfect care of my DS Lite, but I'm not immune to certain problems. While screen protectors have saved me from vertical scratches caused by Meteos (My Phat is scratched beyond), I have a cracked hinge. My cracked hinge can almost certainly be attributed to my use of the Nerf DS armor accessory. I never had a problem before using this accessory, but it's added weight, and hing system caused additional stress to the hinge, causing it to crack.

The worst my DS lite has suffered so far is being covered in fingerprints... but that's what I get for buying the black one. :P I really babied the thing for the first few months, but now I don't worry about it because I play the thing all the time and after nearly a year it's doing just fine! That's pretty good coming from a clutz like me... :)

Nope, sounds like you got one in the batch of DS' that have that problem.

I and many others users have the NERF case with no problems whatsoever.

Sorry about the hinge problem though, go get it fixed.

Sorry, but it sounds like you're wrong. I've used and abused my DS Lite since the moment it released, and I never had a problem with the hinges. Trust me, when the news got out about the cracks, I checked my DS on a regular basis. It wasn't until I started using the Nerf DS armor, that the cracks appeared. To anyone who has used this accessory, you'll be quick to notice that the DS doesn't extend to it's full opening, quite like it did before. It almost feels "forced" into the fully open position, and the added weight of the top screen never felt quite right.

Now that I'm playing Ninja Gaiden in a "sideways book" style position, I removed my Nerf Armor, and things have been great. The Nerf Armor is a great accessory, but I feel it has had a negative effect on my system overall. I don't care if others agree, but that is my experience, and I'm sticking to it.

I'm a walking hazard. I've dropped my DS on the cement, spilled water on it countless times, and have taken away the innocence of the bottom screen with my Ouendan playing.

The DS is damn near indestructible I assure you.

Well....Don't carry it around in a relatively tight jean pocket all the time. The hinge on mine got jostled, and it got scratched a lot (Don't ask).

I'm very careful with my DS Phat, so it has hardly any significant cosmetic flaws.

However, my little cousin (he's gonna be 5 this year) has dropped his so many times on tile and cement. It lasted a lot longer than predicted, until it eventually cracked in half. However, my uncle got it repaired, so it continued to work for a whole longer. Finally, the poor machine died, and my cousin now has a DS Lite.

Found your problem

Perhaps if you took care of it it wouldn't have had so much stress when you got the NERF case

Better luck with the next one.

DS Lite's are indestrutible. There was this website where they dropped PSP's and DS Lite's out of buildings and stuff, and the DS still worked... although it was VERY scratched

My phat ds touch screen stopped working got it repaired 3 weeks later stopped again.Decided to wait for the lite bought it cracked hinge in 2 days then fell apart.send me a replacement and last night opened ds and top right corner fell off button and all.just bought a new one hope it lasts cause it is gettin expensive for me to play it lol. oh and i treat my stuff like gold so absolutly no abuse to them just bad luck i guess. Damn system has to many good games or i would of given up on it by now.
