I. Wii and E3
This will be the fourth appearance of the Nintendo Wii at an E3 media summit. It all started E3 2005, when Nintendo revealed a controller-less little black box. Codenamed Revolution, it intrigued gamers and developers as months passed and few news were released.
Then came E3 2006, and the now named Wii and white colored console was already the most hyped hardware after the Wiimote revelation at TGS 2005. The Wii was the highlight of the event, and it can be said the huge success at launch results from the impressive E3 2006 show.
E3 2007, despite its smaller proportions, was an important event for the Wii as well: the biggest hits, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bors. Brawl, were dated and/or demoed alongside the Wii Balance Board.
Today, the Wii is well ahead its competitors, and we approach E3 2008. According to our beloved Regginator, it's gonna be huge. What is waiting for us at this historic event?
II. Hardware speculation
II.1. Wii Colors
It's about time. Back when the Wii was first revealed, Nintendo had this shiny pic of five different colored "Revolutions", and everyone had already chosen which one he or she would buy at launch day. As November 2006 approached, we learned only white would be available, for marketing purposes. We are getting close to Wii's second birthday, it's about time to release new colors. I'm dying for a black one.
II.2. Wii storage solution
Nintendo recently commented on this matter:
"We definitely detect that they [gamers] are serious and we know there is an issue in this, so it's something that we're working on."
"Definitely there's no plan to issue hardware, an external hard drive, but we know that we have an issue in that area," he added. "It's very obvious and we're perfectly aware of it, but there's nothing we can say beyond this."
We will have to wait and see.
II.3. Wii peripherals
Nintendo will show a new Wiimote accessory at its press conference Tuesday. The Wii MotionPlus is supposed to enhance the Wiimote motion capabilities. What game will showcase its new features?
II.4. Wii Channels
We might have one or two good (or useless) surprises here. New channels are an opportunity to rethink the Wii interface, which is kinda lacking. For example, where are the folders for VC games? The Nintendo channel was a step in the right direction, so let's hope Nintendo focus in a more organized interface from now on.

III.1. First Party
>> Nintendo announced June 16th their focus for the hardcore audience will be huge during E3 period:
"We recently announced the upcoming release of Mario Super Sluggers. Additionally, we will be announcing several new titles that core gamers will be interested in around the time of E3. The clear majority of people waiting in line outside retailers on Sunday mornings to buy their Wii consoles are core gamers. Look at the plans being made by third-party publishers. They realize that Wii is the current platform of choice in this generation, and their bottom lines depend on appealing to the largest base." - Marc Franklin, director of public relations at Nintendo
>> It was reported July 2nd that UK's Nintendo Official Magazine teased an Animal Crossing appearance in their next issue, which pretty much means it will be featured at E3. Moreover, they mentioned two untitled action games. Speculate, forumites, speculate!
>> Nintendo is streaming their conference at E3 for us, and we have a RP-M range ESRB rating under the video window. That gives us a glimpse of the variety of software they will show.
>> Thus, let's now list the Nintendo games that have an actual chance of showing up:
Animal Crossing
Confirmed to be at E3, Animal Crossing Wii is supposed to feature WiiConnect24 and to be released this year, both in Japan and USA. Considering WiiConnect24 has yet to show any actual in game functionality, it is the perfect timing to reveal it.
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Astonishingly, it was dated for July 3rd in Japan! Did it happen? Well, we might actually see it at E3, then...
Kirby
Kirby Wii is in development, but has yet to be unveiled. Maybe this E3?
Mario Super Sluggers
After Mario Kart, it's time for baseball in the Mushroom Kingdom. It is most likely to be demoed at E3.
Pikmin 3
A no brainer. Pikmin + Wii = Pur3 hax! Miyamoto himself admitted Pikmin is perfectly suited for the Wii, and we cannot wait for a third instalment in the series. In a Super Mario Galaxy fashion, it can be marketed both for hardcore and casual gamers, so it simply has to happen.
Punch Out!! Wii
Yes. It's back. Let's just wait for E3 bonanza now, as Punch Out!! Wii, with Balance Board support, should be the sublimation of WiiBoxing.
Retro Studios project(s)
Despite some serious internal changes, Retro Studios is still supporting the Wii. Retro has at least one project, which may show up at E3. Rumors go as far as an Ocarina of Time spin off, but only time will tell.
Star Fox
Most people didn't notice it, but Star Fox Wii is actually in development. Yes, you heard me right. My sources, you ask? Right here. "Miyamoto revela que já está fazendo os primeiros testes e estudos para levar Star Fox, a famosa série de naves espaciais, ao Wii". Oh, don't worry, my portuguese is flawless (some of you know, I'm brazilian), and I can translate it for you: "Miyamoto reveals he's leading the first tests to bring Star Fox, the famous flight series, to the Wii." This is from almost one year ago, so Star Fox may be ready to be revealed. Hell yeah.
Wario Land: Shake It!
Wario Land comes back after a long hiatus; the series had no games since Wario Land 4 on GBA (2001).
WiiMusic
It was demoed back at E3 2006. Since, few news. But development hasn't stopped - some info on gameplay was revealed last year, and Reggie himself confirmed it's a good candidate for E3 2008 love. Sounds like Nintendo's best effort in the "WiiGames" series so far.
WiiWare
Dr. Mario and My Pokémon Ranch are far from a worthy first party WiiWare line up. We all know, this gen Nintendo is focusing on letting the third parties shine (although it's kinda hard when so many of them don't take the Wii as seriously as they should) and they gave them some time to benefit from WiiWare. But it's time to show the real deal. Expect some real effort on WiiWare from Nintendo this E3.
And now for the "we can always hope..." games:
1080° Snowboarding
Snowboard. Balance Board. Miyamoto claiming he would like to work on it again. Yes, hope, there is.
Donkey Kong
It has been 9 years since Donkey Kong 64 - an excellent game a bit too much inspired on Banjo-Kazooie. Will Donkey Kong someday return to the glory of the Donkey Kong Country games? My guess: not this E3.
Earthbound
Ness is familiar to us through the Smash Bros. games. But it has never shown any hint it would get some love from Nintendo and be back on home consoles. My guess: not even this generation.
F-Zero
Nintendo released Mario Kart some time ago, so they might want to wait a bit before announcing a new racer. But here is hope for F-Zero at E3 2008 and a reminder that it will eventually happen, even if only next E3.Kid Icarus
Another missing in action franchise brought back to our daily gaming through Smash Bros. Brawl. Since Pit's appearance in the game, rumors have gone crazy pointing to an eventual Wii game. It may happen, but frankly, given that the only Pit games ever released are a NES and a GameBoy one, a Wii incarnation may just be anything. From an instant c.lassic to a shameful flop, from a flight game to an RPG.
