Being as Lucas is on of my favorite new additions to Brawl could anyone tell me a bit of background information on the Earthbound series. I'm only 16, so the snes wasnt exactly in my generation.

Good game? Bad game? Should I be watching out for these games on VC? Thanks!

I could write a novel on this game (series) but I'm at work. Look it up on Wikipedia.

Great game on Snes, worth $8 on VC for sure. If you like RPG's and games that don't themselves seriously, then keep on eye on it.

Its an awesome game. Hopefully it will come to the virtual console, and as soon as it does make sure to try it out. The story is so great and quirky. It also has a great community...just go to the website starmen.net to see what I mean...

Ah, we can convert him.

The first Mother game was a Japanese-only NES game that was pretty good... a little crude graphically, but it was the NES and the story completely made up for its shortcomings. Earthbound was released here and while it didn't sell well at all, there are lots of rabid fans like myself that have played this game to death. It's one of the funniest games made and the story is amazing. Mother 3 is also Japan-only and there's a strong push from fans of Earthbound to bring the game here, but I don't see that ever happening unless they give me control of Nintendo.

When it's released on the VC, you're obligated to buy it and play it until your thumbs fall off.

Oh man, where to start. I'm a big fan. I used a battle screen mockup as a signature for a while.

The EB series (called Mother in Japan) take place in a world resembling a parody of modern America, unlike most RPGs. The fanbase is one of the most fiercely loyal I have seen for any game series ever.

The original was completely translated, but never released because it was so late in the NES's lifespan and deemed not profitable.

The SNES game most of the fans are familiar with was poorly marketed and didn't sell all that well, but it's still heralded as one of the most unique RPGs ever made.

Mother 3, the one with Lucas, was also apparently not worthy of an English release, so some hardcore fans are translating it themselves.

The gameplay is pretty simple and straightforward, sort of like a modified Dragon Quest game. Just a lot sillier.

I'm praying for a VC release, as are others.

So the one on the SNES is really #2 and not an updated port of the one for the NES?

I don't know if you'll see it on the VC any time soon, seeing as it's not really everyone's piece of cake, but it was a damn good game. I was about to make referance to something that is not to be made referance to that would probably get me banned from the GS foums. I'll let you decide what that something is. Use it. Enjoy it.

Oh, yeah, the game is also called Mother. Earthbound was the only English installment in the series and was actually the second game. Lucas is from Mother 3, Ninten is the main character in Mother 1 and Ness is from Mother 2, or Earthbound.

It'd be a great vc release, seeing has how they're putting out games I've never heard of and other imports. I could use a good TRUE rpg experience. Most rpgs they put out now are horrid X_X.

Why doesn't Nintendo put this on the VC??? Don't they realize if they do then it will be a commercial and critical success like it was in Japan? and who cares about the legal stuff, anyway? if they got away with it when it was first released here on the SNES, then they'll get away with it again. if they don't get away with it or don't want to take the chance, then why don't they ask all of the groups that they parodied for permission! IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, NINTENDO!!!

Lucas is in Mother 3, the sequel to Earthbound. Each game stars different characters.

I'm guessing they don't see it profiting them if they have to go through all the trouble of getting the game licensed/changed for it to not sell well like on the SNES.

Nintendo doesn't have anywhere near the money or the connections to bring the series to the Virtual Console

It's one of those games where you find the old cart and a console that plays it

There are legal issues to a VC or any other release I believe. But I don't have the energy right now to type the details

Regarding your question there is 3 earthbound games one for the NES, anather for the SNES which is the only one realased state-side, and Mother 3 for the GBA

and BTW the serios is called mother in japan.

Just google it. I'm sure you'll find something. But the best thing to do is to actually play the series. It's a great game series and I really wish it would come back. Start with Earthbound: Zero, work from there.

I never liked Earthbound. I felt that it was just a mediocre Dragon Quest clone, but that's my opinion. It would be a welcome addition to the VC for the many fans who cannot afford the extravagantly overpriced cartridge. I'm not going to pay $100 for a Super Nintendo game that isn't that rare. You could buy Chrono Trigger, FF VI, and FF IV cartridges for $100. It really should be available for legal download for a fraction of the cost.
