You should definitely get at least one white mage. Thief is a good choice as well

My first combo was Red Mage, White Mage, Thief and Warrior.

Here's my suggestion:

1. White mage: must have

2. Warrior: pros -- strong attack power; high hit points

cons -- loses larger amounts of HP; no good for the final battle

3. Black mage: pros -- strong support

cons -- cannot equip better bows

4. Ninja: pros -- has the advantage of throwing any weapon (even a rod...); good for the final battle (even in the  backrow)

cons -- low defense for a physical-oriented fighter (compared to knights, dragoons...)

5. Geomancer: pros -- pretty strong attack and defense throughout the game; surprisingly effective for final battle (well, only if you use terrain in each round)

cons -- doesn't always deliver the kinda terrain attack you'd want; lesser items available for you to equip

6. Summoner: pros -- has the advantage of summoning Bahamut and Leviathan; fancy animation when performing a summon

cons -- you won't get this job until you're close to preparing for the final battle (before Eureka)

7. Devout: pros -- your strongest backup; performs holy; good for final battle; more resistant to magical attacks

cons -- you won't get this job until you're close to preparing for the final battle (before Eureka)

8. Scholar: pros -- if you've collected and saved enough white musks, this job can easily help defeat the final boss

cons -- "defend" command not available for this job; lesser items available for you to equip

9. Dragoon: pros -- stronger attacks; high hit points

cons -- takes too long to get into the air and land back into position (so this job would miss a lot of healing during battle, because it's kinda hard to time the jumps); don't recommend this job for final battle

I'm still early in the game, and I've had good luck with 2 Red Mages, a Thief, and a Black Mage. Tons of damage and the Red Mages can take care of healing. It works great for regular battles, but it seems to not work so well against bosses...

When I got to choose jobs, I had 2 red mages, 1 black mage and 1 warrior.
Choosing a warrior was annoying actually, especially the part in the game where you have to meet gnomes.
(Not going to elaborate, since it'll be a spoiler.)
But I like the team anyway. Does their job well.

I went with a Warrior, a Monk, a Red Mage and a Black Mage and didn't have any problems. I didn't really find the White Mage all that useful until way later in the game. Besides... The Red Mage can do pretty much everything the White Mage can do anyways. Sure... The White Mage gets more MP, but it's a small price to pay to be able to use both White Magic and Black Magic and be able to wield swords.

a couple  battles before you are going to level up change to a blackbelt. Then change back after you level up. You should be fine with any combination if you do that.

I have a little question. Is Ingus better than Luneth or the opposite or the same?

Because I'm an over-levelling person, I got Luneth's Job Level to about 18 before leaving Altar Cave.

For the first set, I did this.

Luneth - Freelancer (Don't underestimate this job at the start; I had Luneth as a Freelancer until the frickin' Water Crystal!)
Arc - Black Mage (He seemed to fit Black Mage well, so I threw him into that job.)
Refia - White Mage (Again, she fit well into White Mage)
Ingus - Warrior (Yeah, Ingus is a pretty good warrior. He fits it well. Also, when you get the second set, switch him up to Knight.)

Also, I didn't change Luneth until the third set, and set him into Dark Knight. Once I can, I'm throwing Ingus onto the Dragoon (When the equipment rolls in.)
