If you have both, maybe share your opinion? I really enjoyed golden sun and final fantasy tactics and have never owned a pokeman game.

*jaw drops* ..well, Final Fantasy III is kind of a tough game, but it has nice graphics and a lot of jobs to choose from. Pokemon is a lot fun, not as challenging as FFIII, but it has more bang for its buck. You get the online features that allow you to battle online, trade, and do some other stuff I don't know much about. FFIII has online capabilties that I haven't used yet. Bottom line: Pokemon is the better game. Coming from an SE fan that isn't easy to say.
When has the main series Pokemon titles ever been bad? They are essentially the best games to come out on Nintendo Handhelds.
So yeah, go for Diamond/Pearl.Â
Pokemon is a very, very long RPG, with tons and tons of content. The story will take you 40 hours to get through; give or take a few hours. Albeit, its not a very deep story; but good for Pokemon games, IMO. After that, the game opens up with TONS more content; with 493 Pokemon (give or take a few) throughout the games, new side-quests and the such. Getting through those is a feat in itself.
The Online play is what you'd expect from it. Trading to get unobtainable Pokemon is pretty easy; either get them through Friends Codes, or assuming youve seen the Pokemon, the Global Trading Station (GTS). The battles are fun; competitive play is a whole lot easier. Except the fact that it requires Friend Codes.
Final Fantasy III is something fans have been wanting for a while; the only FF we probably havent played (Unless you played the Japanese version), with full, 3D graphics like the PS1 Final Fantasy's. The story is something that appeals to Old School RPG fans. Unfortunately, as I have yet to beat the final dungeon, I cant give you a time frame for beating this game.
The character customization is deep; with 23 classes in total. With 4 characters, making a perfect team is quite the feat.
The games Online play, and in some ways, the set up, is severly messed up. The Online is just Email, which can be sent once an hour. The Email is to unlock special weapons and a secret class. No where near as fun as DP. The games layouts a little tedious; first off, Pheonix Downs arent sold in stores; which is a pain. Long dungeons have NO Save Points. Which is REALLY annoying. The story isnt that appealing to anyone not a classic RPG fan. The touch screen controls, although can be used with the D-Pad, are sloppily executed, IMO. Most the time, you'll want to use the D-Pad. Most people complains the Bottom Screen isnt used enough; but in FFIII, the Top Screen is left blank for a majority of the game. The Map at the top isn't really that good either.
FFIII will last you for a little while, but once its done, you probably won't be compelled to play it again. The online is bad, and the layout should have been tweaked. No buyable Pheonix Downs are one thing; no save points in dungeons is just saddistic.
Pokemon D/P will last you for hours. Then, once you complete the story; the game gets a lot bigger. With almost 500 Pokemon, and Online Battling, the Online for this game will have you playing this game for a long time. Not only that, but Minigames such as the Secret Base (and, with that, Sinnoh Underground), can help you take a break from Training and Battling. The only real problem I see is also its best feature; online. You have to be careful in trades, to make sure your not getting ripped off, or if the Pokemon is hacked. Battling; you need Friend Codes (as compared to either searching for an opponent or battling a random opponent). Its kinda annoying.
Pokemon has a longer lasting time. Both are good games for RPG fans. FFIII is more greatly appreciated by old school RPG fans; while Pokemon can be fun to almost anyone. Pokemon is the better buy; FFIII is atleast worth a Rent, or a buy if you can find one for a bargain price.

FFIII is a great game, I think it took me something like 35-40 hours to beat. If you enjoyed Golden Sun you'll very likely enjoy this as well. Saving and not being able to buy Phoenix Downs adds to the challenge of the game, but doesn't really present its self as much of an obstacle as you progress through the game.Â
I don't have Pokemon yet, but judging by the praise it's gotten it seems a lot of fun.
