I need to get an accurate measurement on the difficulty of FFIV.

My friend says its so hard that he can't beat it, some one on GS told me he was over-levelled without grinding, and some websites didn't mention the difficulty at all. The most detailed source was an issue of NP, which said that 'the game was punishing at times, but nothing that can't be overcome with some trial and error or half an hour leveling your characters.'

However, I still need to hear from the people in this forum, as I really want to play Final Fantasy, but don't want to settle for the lesser characters in FFIII.

I really don't think its that hard. Their are a few tough bosses but other then that you should'nt have much trouble with it.

I will just say this:

Grinding makes an huge diference. Two more levels and BAM, boss is dead.

I believe the DS version is slightly easier than the earlier versions, I remember the PS1 version had an insane encounter rate and that'd what kill you.

Yeah from what I remember it definitely is.

Of course I was a little kid when I played the first version so that could be it. :p

The difficulty on the DS version is way higher than any other version. In the final dungeon, it's entirely possible for your whole party to get wiped out in a single random encounter because the enemies are so tough. And that was with a ton of grinding and skill tweaking on my part (and a bunch of the best equipment in the game). That said, it's not impossible, and if you learn enemy weaknesses (paralyze is your friend!) to exploit it helps out a ton.

Do augments make the game any easier? I've been playing the game and for the most part it's been nothing too tough, now I'm in the final areas of the game and out of no where there are enemies who can wipe out some of my party members in one hit.

Yea I dunno about augments (didn't really play much in the DS version) but I remember in the GBA version, the final dungeon was certainly tough. So I just think it's in general that the last area in FF4 is tough regardless of version.

I agree with the staff member, the difficulty is very high especially when you proceed more into the story itself.

Augments help out tremendously, and you can do some really crazy stuff with them that you couldn't ever do in any other way. For example, my Cecil had augments that ensured he would be the target of any physical attack, which would then cause him to counter-attack with Kick to hit everyone. I would recommend checking out GameFAQ--there's a lot of really helpful stuff there.

I got to the final dungeon and got so frustrated with the stupid silver dragons that I just sold the game without beating it. =P

Way to give up :P You should've just persisted by grinding a bit more. I'm not sure how *hard the DS version is but I beat the GBA version at around level 50s.

I couldn't beat the DS version until I was in my high 70's/low 80's I believe. Anyway, it's worth it if you can get through the end. Now, Final Fantasy III was an altogether different kind of stupid hard...

Mmm, I only got about 4/5th's of a ways in the game before I stopped playing... got bored playing. But from what I've played, it's a rather difficult game and it seems more difficult than earlier incarnations. I found that I had to level grind every once in awhile, but I suppose it wasn't too bad.

I'm halfway through Dragon Quest 4 first half was easy to get through but I'm guessing that the other half near the end of the game will be hard.

Ha, I probably should have, shouldn't I? I just got a bit tired of the dumb monsters on the moon...

A few bosses are very difficult, especially if you don't know what to expect, but grinding does help a lot. I also found that things become FAR easier on the second playthrough with the augments you gather the first time through.

I only played FFIV on GBA before buying it on DS.... GBA version seems like a breeze looking back. As others have said, it's not impossible, but can be quite a challenge at times.

a friend actually told me that level grinding was the only thing he remembered doing in FFIV... it must be hard.

I think I got to about half way through, it wasn't all that hard. Just grind from time to time.

Maybe it's because the story is overall pretty forgettable :P

absolutely agree. This game is **** mental compared to any other version I played. I musta finished this game around level 40s on super NES 100 years ago but on the DS im almost level 70 and after grinding in a dungeon for 1 hour I open a chest deep down in the moon and get into a battle against a red dragon whom i cant run from who spams me with Temporal rays or some **** wipes my whole party out in **** 3 seconds. I think half the people here who voted never played the **** game. I want to smash my DS into dust.
