That depends. It is pretty hard and takes a lot of grinding. If you aren't up for the challenge, the PS1/GBA version with 16 bit-ish graphics and toned down difficulty would be better for you.

Fighter - Thief/Ninja - White Mage - Black Mage seems to work for most people I've known. One Red Mage and an extra Fighter has worked for me too.

If you're a fan of the series, why not? Even if you hate you'll get to see how it all started and it's only $5.

You could also try Final Fantasy 2 on the VC. It's a lot easier and is actually better than Final Fantasy 1.

FF1 is awesome, but very hard.

fighter - black belt - white mage - black mage

best part imo.

For your first playthrough especially, I agree with this party. Strong, and it will give you lots of variety. Black belts are insane later on!

This party is best IMO, but I don't think it's a hard game at all especially once that black belt is higher level.

I'm playing through it right now as well on the VC. I made attempts in the past to beat it but never did because I didn't grind enough. Now I'm focused and cruising so far. I've got 2 fighters, 1 black, and 1 white mage. I didn't realize black belts were so good... bummer.

There has been a lot of chatter about this game lately. I started playing it on Sunday and all of a sudden I've noticed a few more posts about it. It's nice to have something to talk about!

It's well worth a look. And at that price even if you hate it it's not a big loss.

FF1 wasn't bad, though I played it on the GBA iteration. The game is rather grind-tastic, but only to the point that I might need to level up two or three times before I can blitz for the next town/dungeon/etc. Money in particular is a pain to build up in in FF1, but its plot and story progression is actually not bad, especially considering that the game came out more than a decade ago. I can't speak for FF 2 (NES). But the GBA one proved to me why it's considered a "red-headed step-child" in the franchise... It manages to have the painful, repetitious sub-grinding for abilities and spells that makes FF 8's look streamilined by comparison, literally forcing you to TK your party members in order to build up spell and armor levels on your characters. To say it's ridiculous, is an understatement. I played through FF 1 with Monk - Thief - White Mage - Black Mage. The monk proved to be awesome early in the game, and a cheap character for raw damage. Once you finally get their prestige class upgrades though, the Thief's Upgrade becomes a real bad-ass, especially with being able to equip two weapons and just ripping apart where the Monk can't. And obviously, as useful as a Red Mage is at first, that usefulness falls apart once you start needing those high-level black and white spells it can't use.
