pros: long fun and addictive, loads of places to explore and such
cons: haveing to swich jobs in certain parts or chaninging the party to gnomes or toads
it's definitely one of my favorites on the DS. it took me about 35 hours to complete it all, plus the sidequests.
I really didn't like it that much. I mean, the gameplay is the same old and stale "walk around and fight monsters in random encounters" thing that should have been done with about 5 years ago, I mean, who wants to walk 3 steps then have the screen fade and entera battle? I sure don't, they could have at least allowed you to see the monsters on-screen before fighting them (like Tales of Symphonia).
THe 3D graphics are also quite not too nice, some parts are good, but the characters look like deformed 3D models which is another reason there aren't many full 3D games in the Nintendo DS market (I'm not sure if Super Mario 64 looks as bad since its also supposedly a full 3D title) although that seems to be getting fixed.
The battles also dragged on for minutes when they could finish in probably, 30 seconds because of those annoyingly long attack animations (which is probably it reached over 30 hours on the DS while the GBA version of Final Fantasy V reached only around 27-28 hours).
The most important reason why it is so bad is because of the horrible story. I can stand random encounters and "alright/good" graphics if the story is unique and interesting like Final Fantasy IV, VI, and beyond that but this story is horrible. Its pretty much "A bunch of orphans have to save the world from a hero that turned evil and have to rescue the crystals" and that's pretty much all you do the whole game with a few sidequests. I really don't understand why after making a decent storyline for FInal Fantasy II, it had to go back to this.
Overall, the only Final Fantasy that didn't leave Japan for a VERY long time, really didn't need tocome here to America, but, as a Final Fantasy fan, I need it for my collection. However, out of all the mainstream Final Fantasies I have played, it pretty much makes its way to the bottom 5 of the list.
I personally didn't like it too much. It had an extremely boring start and i just didn't find it all that impressive a game.
i'd rather play my old gba golden suns.
I'm half way through the game and think its pretty cool. The constant battles can be annoying, but that kinda the theme of FF games (and many others)
The fight animations are a little limited as well. I have played a FF rip off on the GBA (something about Sun? can't remember name now) that had cool battle annimations.
Golden Sun is the game your talking about. It may be a generic fantasy rpg but it also happens to be my favourite rpg.I'm half way through the game and think its pretty cool. The constant battles can be annoying, but that kinda the theme of FF games (and many others)

i totally agree with platyphyllum. the story is what really killed it for me. and the fact that THERE ARE NO SAVE POINTS IN DUNGEONS. with the end boss being nearly impossible, save spots really are a must. it was really disappointing compared with any other final fantasy.
I think the game's ok in small doses. I really enjoyed all the different classes there were to try out and experiment, but I felt like I had to grind to much for my liking and playing the combat felt a bit sluggish at times, not to mention the story was incredibly bland. I know it's a remake of an old game, but I could only play this for about 30 minutes before I got a little bored.
Well it's obvious we have some whiners in here. This is an old school RPG. If you're not used to the classic system of random encounters and mild difficulty, don't bother. The DS version is much much easier than the original famicom and yet people still think it's hard so that should tell you about the difficulty and impatient of games/gamers these days. Now that I've had my rant..... I've played it dozens of times through including the original famicom version. I absolutely understand how the gamers of this generation would think this is outdated but it is a classic, it is one of those games that became a building block for many others. I enjoyed it.. But keep in mind, it is a 17 years old with updated graphics. Very unfair to compare it to today's games but that's up to you.
BTW, you actually have to level your characters,... you know, put some work into it.. Can't expect to run to the end.. and don't expect to save it a step before a boss and try it over and over again. If you die, you go and level and come back. It's not an EA (let me change the difficulty during play) game.. It punishes you.. and actually takes patience.
its a pretty good game if u like the old school rpg setting. The jobs are cool once u get used to them (although they only hav like one skill each excluding the mage classes or any class that can use magic). Although the one thing about this game that annoyed me was the fact that you CANT FRIKKIN SAVE THE GAME OUTSIDE TOWNS AND DUNGEONS
other than that it is a solid rpg that should keep u busy for quite a while :)
I actually liked the challenge the gamegave us, but there were tons of other stuff that made me want to just throw the game away after I finished it.Well it's obvious we have some whiners in here.
