Hey guys I just got my DS and I want to eventually play all the Final Fantasy games because I loved FF7 back on the PS and even the older SNES ones. I am wondering, do the story lines of these FF games have anything to do with each other?? Is there a certain order I should play the games? If so could you please list them for me. I figured I would start with the oldest one being Final Fantasy 3 but after that I am unsure which one to start. Also, can someone tell me if Final Fantasy 3 for DS is the same as Final Fantasy 3 for the SNES? Or is it a whole new story?

Each final fantasy is separate. A few exceptions in the series are: FFXII: Revanent Wings (DS) comes directly after FFXII (PS2). FF Tactics A2 (DS) is sequel to FF Tactics Advance (GBA) and they are connected the the FFXII world.

But, FFIII, FIV, and FFCC Rings of Fate, and FFCC Echoes of Time (all DS) are all completely stand alone.

On the PlayStation 2, FFX-2 (PS2) comes after FFX (PS2)

Sorry, missed that part. FFIII (DS) is a remake of the oringal FFIII (Japan Only). FFIII on the SNES was actually FFVI. So the FFIII (DS) is not the same as the SNES FFIII (since the SNES one is actually FFVI).

The only version of the actual FFIII in the US is the DS game.

FFVI is available as FFVI on the GBA, and as FFIII on the SNES. (Oh! It's also on the FF Anthology for the original PS as FFVI).

PS. FFIII and FFIV are the traditional turn-based RPG's like the rest of the core FF games. But the FFCC games are real time action RPGs, FFXII Revanent Wings is real time strategy, and FF tactics is turn-based strategy gameplay instead.

Just to add: some FF games have had direct sequels that continue their respective stories. Final Fantasy IV had FFIV: The After Years, which can be found on the Wii. Final Fantasy V had an anime. Final Fantasy VII had a sequel movie (Advent Children), a sequel shooter game (Dirge of Cerberus), a prequel mobile phone game that you can't get outside of Japan (Before Crisis), and another prequel for PSP (Crisis Core). Final Fantasy X had X-2 on PS2, and FFXII Revenant Wings that YoBrandio mentioned is a RTS sequel to Final Fantasy XII, which in turn takes place in the same world (though in very distant epochs) as Final Fantasy Tactics.

Thanks for the info MAILER_DAEMON, If I had all those consoles I would play them all, lol. I was tempted to get a PSP over my DS so I could play crisis core. Just thought I would post my next question here instead of making new post... My question is now about Dragon Quest. I have never heard of the game until today and my question is pretty much the same as my FF question. Does the story line of this game continue throughout all the Dragon Quest games? If they do what order would be best to play them in? I'm confused about the order of them because Dragon Quest IX just came out and Dragon Quest VI is yet to be released. So the release dates obviously aren't following the roman numeral numbering system of the games.

Dragon Quest/Warrior is a bit different. The first three games are part of a trilogy, with II being a clear sequel to the first game (you play as the hero's descendants), and III being a
prequel where you play as the legendary hero constantly referred to in both games
. IV, V, and VI all involve a castle in the sky known as Zenithia, which is why these are known as the Zenitia Trilogy, even though whether or not they take place in the same universe is unclear. VII, VIII, and IX are like Final Fantasy in that the only connections are just common themes and enemies. However, a few spinoff games exist, such as the Torneko games that focus on a character from DQIV or the Yangus game that serves as a prequel to DQVIII (only available in Japan).
