I don't think so.  Its an old game and the difficulty is a little unforgiving, you need to level grind quite a bit.

Personally I don't like the game, as the big attraction (the large number of jobs) is pointless, because only 5 or 6 of them are worth using, and leveling other classes doesn't add anything to your characters on the whole.  Also, the story is far too basic

No it isn't a good starting point. The game is (in my opinion) one of the worst Final Fantasies (the game is still OK), the difficulty is a little unforgiving for newcomers, story is way too basic and simplistic and probabl won't catch your atention and the Job system is too simplistic (the one in Final Fantasy V Advance is better).

Start with buying a copy of either final fantasy 4 advance if you want to play on the DS (part 6 is also a good choice) , but if you want to know why players adore FF, buy a PS2 (it's quite cheap these days) and pick off a copy of either final fantasy 7 (although it is a bit dated today)or the latest one in the series FF 12 .

Final Fantasy 3 on the DS isn't a bad game, but it's not the best FF game out there .

I started with FFIII as I would like to know what was so special about the legendary FF series. I didn't like it, thought goldensun for GBA was better. But as said FFIII isn't as great as other FF that I still should try out. The story wasn't interesting, it might have been original back in it's day but now it feels like an below average version of a story told to many times. The characters weren't interesting and I didn't care for them. Combat felt a bit dated and I thought that the combat looked better in goldensun. Still it's a long game that's worth playing if you like this kind of games. You definatly shouldn't buy it unless you know that you like turnbased rpgs.

I'd never played a final fantasy game until I played Final Fantasy III for DS. It's made me want to play other Final Fantasy games.

I quite like it. But then again I do have a strange love for leveling up alot....

FF7 looks dated... not if your playing DS game FF6 visuals are dated. I agree though start on FF7 it's the best Traditional FF in the series.it's not to hard either so it's good for beginners.

strange. am i the only one who likes FF 3 so much than other FFs? My first FF was 8 and then 1,2,4 and lastly 3. But then again, i love leveling-up. FF 3 brings me back memories of the awesome old RPG games. However, it would be better for you to start with 4 or 7 because you might have some difficulties. For me, FF 3 is kinda easy. Even my friend played his first FF, FF 3 and it was easy for him but i was helping him LOL.

FFIII is a good game, but probably not the best game to introduce yourself to the series. Your best bet would be to pick up a copy of FFVI Advance or FFX for PS2. Both games have great stories and battle systems, and are pretty easy to find.8)

Although I really like FF, you've played like the worst games of the series, which is probably why you like FFIII so much. I can't say that FFIII is bad though 'cause i haven't played it, it's the only one in the main series I actually haven't played. You should try FFVI, FFVII, FFX, FFXII, those are truly legendary games imo (FFVII being the best game i've ever played) :)

Final Fantasy IV isn't one of the worst games of the series in my opinion. The others he listed kinda were.

Final Fantasy III is the first and only Final Fantasy game I've played, but all I can say is that it's a pretty mean game for someone who isn't used to older RPGs. x_x

The best Final Fantasy game remains Final Fantasy Tactics in my opinion. It's probably not the best to start with, but after you've played through VII (you must play this one), give Tactics a shot.

So far I am barely into chapter 2 of FF3,Loving every moment of it.If your a fan of older rpg game systems then it is very easy to get wrapped up in it.Never liked one FF on the regular consoles expect for tactics myself though. In my oppion the best linear final fantasy's were the final fantasy legend series on the gameboy.Eating food to turn into monsters and making your own time traveling plane is just classic.

to the OP... it depends. IMHO, FF3 is a VERY good game for the DS. but yeah, its not a "new" FF game, so the story is a bit dated. it was an original story when it first came out like 15 years ago, but not so much anymore. there is a bit of "grinding" here, but not that much, nor is it a "difficult" game, IMHO. i like it becuz it IS "old-school" as far as combat and story are concerned. it's basically a polished up 2006 presentation of an early 90's game.... if you feel you've "been there, done that" with older RPG's, you probably won't be wowed by FF3. the newer FF games will give you a feel where FF is today, like FFX or FFXII. both of those are legendary (as is FF7 and FF8).... if you just want a great RPG for your DS, you cant go wrong with FF3
