cbeck said it all, i've been playing rpgs since i was 8, probably my first was shining force. From the FF series, my first FF was FF VI for the snes, and that's what those type of rpgs are about: know what you're doing and be a good customizer, especially when sellecting special equipment.
Not trying to sound arrogant, but i'm a type of rpg expert battler, i finished FF IV with a party of lvs 60 and i didn't had all that skill setups or special equipment that you have to scavenge/steal for it. Sometimes i fight bosses poorly prepared, but i manage to win because i know what i'm doing, i know how to counter certain moves and i know how to battle effectively, but because sometimes i'm poorly prepared, the boss always ends being a bit harder and troublesome than expected.
There are other types of rpg experts, those who i call scavengers and armorers are those people who always try to look in every hole that they can find for the finestequipments/skill/item setups that they can find to counter bosses and be ready for anything, due to the nature of using best setups, they don't even need to be battle experts to defeat bosses.
Those types of rpgs are just like fighting games, people think you just need to mash buttons but no, in fighting games to be an expert you need practice and knowledge about the moves. RPGs are the same, you need knowledge of what you need to do and experience to figure how an enemy can attack and how you can counter it.
