I feel really dumb right now because I accidentally put FFXI last time I tried to make this topic. Really sorry about that, because I MEANT to put Final Fantasy IV for the DS, and the thread got locked because the game I accidentally put was for a different console apparently. I got a few responses before it was closed, but I'd like a few more, cheers :D

After carefully going over the recommendation thread, and doing a lot of of video and written researching, as well as looking up reviews and video reviews on Youtube I have decided to get my first Final Fantasy game in years. I bought Tactics for my Gameboy Advance. While fun, the restrictions on weapons and powers was infurriating! And it seemed to get impossibly hard even near the beginning. Needless to say, it showed me that Turn Based strategy games were not for me. Now, Tactics gave me a bleak look at Final Fantasy, and since then I have not touched the series. However, looking at the reviews and videos for these two DS games, I think the excitement spark is coming back.

Now here is my problem: Which one should I get? I like the look of the Revenant Wings because it's an RTS type of thing, and I like those games. The graphics are nice, and it gets good scores on reviews. But I also am getting drawn into Final Fantasy IV, which is odd for me because I don't usually like RPG games where you are suddenly attacked by something and you have to "Pokemon style" fight with it until you die, or the enemy does.

I think both look quite exciting, but I just can't choose between them right now! What shall I do?

Thanks for reading this post if you are reading it for the second time, I apppreciate it. I've double checked now, and it's about DS games now, so I hope it wont get locked again. :D Thanks for all/any help you can offer.

i still think that if strategy's not your type of game, then you might not like revenant wings.

Real Time strategy is though. I don't care for turn based because it feels like a battle lasts hours. This looks a bit more "Instant Action" type of game :D

well, the game has a lot of story, some RPG elements (for the "squad leaders"), and that "jo-ken-po" (aka rock-paper-scissors) like thing. flying beats meele that beats ranged that beats flying. and the "strategy" part isn't that big, be warned. still, it's an awesome game. you might want to check at least a bit of the first final fantasy XII (for the PS2). it may not be necessary to get the story, but revenant wings is still a direct sequel.

Wait, a game for the PS2 made a sequel for the DS? Not sure I get that, but I've been told the story in Revenant Wings is resonably easy to follow for open-minded gamers :D

it is, but it's nice to know a bit of the character's back story. and yes, a PS2 exclusive got a DS exclusive sequel.

I played Revenant Wings and it was alright. It was like RTS-lite, but didn't really draw me in. Final Fantasy IV is an amazing game, but it's one of the hardest Final Fantasy games in a while. The combat later on gets pretty unforgiving, so if the difficulty in FFTA turned you off, you might get a little frustrated with FFIV DS (I certainly did, and I thought FFTA was a little on the easy side compared to other tactics RPGs).

Anyway, that's my two cents. The bottom line is what you're looking for: FFIV is a more traditional RPG (albeit difficult), and RW is part lite-RTS, part lite-RPG. I personally enjoyed FFIV more, even though it did frustrate me.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, Robbie. Firstly, FFIV is not "Pokemon combat." It's good old ATB (Active Time Battle). It isn't forgiving, and requires particular strategy and quick reflexes to succeed (especially in the DS remake, as they upped the difficulty.) Make no mistake, you don't just sit there and consider your options; if you're slow, you're dead. It's not as bad as I make it sound, but in no way is it "take turns hitting eachother until you win."

Revenant Wings is a fun game, though not as deep in plot or character advancement as FFIV. Its RTS-lite combat is quite fun, but don't expect Warcraft/Command & Conquer calibur gameplay. It has a rock-scissors-paper approach to combat (Melee-->Ranged-->Flying-->Melee) which adds some strategic depth, but not as much as you'd think. It has its challenges, and plenty of side missions and Monster Melees to do, though they can get a bit repetitive at times. Check out my review of Revenant Wings for more info ;)

Final Fantasy IV is an awesome remake of a masterpiece. Involving and immersive, it encourages fast combat and exploration. The story is deep, the character personalities are varied, and there's plenty to explore and master. Can't really go wrong with FFIV.

Dude, I'd get both. Both are fun, and are completely different.

Final Fantasy IV. There's nothing wrong with Revenant Wings, just not as good as IV.
