I made a poll about FF3 vs EO2 and EO2 won in a 2 to 1 victory. If FF4 is not harder than FF3 then I predict that both EOs are going to win in a landslide. I think both EOs are harder than FF4.
Etrian Odyssey games by far. They are punishingly difficult because they place monsters in your path that you have no hope of defeating at your current level. Why anyone would think that is a good gameplay mechanic is beyond me... but the games are still good. Each level also has a massive jump in difficulty... you could refer the difficulty to stairs instead of a ramp like most RPG games.
Final Fantasy IV has difficulty spikes and a quickly scaling difficulty, but it doesn't put something in front of you just to murder your party.
Etrian Odyssey of course. It's relatively insane in difficulty (not that it's a good thing). I put absolutely no value in game difficulty. I'd rather play easier games than the ones who reward players who grind for hours. Besides what's so difficult about grinding experience? It's just time consuming, not hard.
The first big boss you encounter in Etrian Odyssey (Fenrir) will kick your ass into oblivion unless you spend a couple of hours levelling up even though you already explored the first five floors completely. It's still a great game though.
is EO 2 as hard as EO? i remembered walking front and back for hours to grind, until i gave up.. (5hours grinding and i still feel really weak on that few levels...)Ignite2k3
I never played the first game but I heard that the second is harder but more user friendly.

IMO, EO 2 is harder than EO1. More obstacles such as damage tiles and random warp tiles, and F.O.Es dont give you EXP anymore.
See, cause FF3 only gave me trouble at the final boss. I beat EO and boy, was that an accomplishment.
When I fooled around with FF4 in Chronicles, I remember a whole crapload of grinding. Maybe that's all it takes to make the game not so tough.

lol, final fantasy 11 is the hardest rpg.
I doubt it! Does that game have overpowered monsters coming out the wazoo? I didn't here about any.

It's an MMO, and it's one of the most tedius and time-consuming out there. Most didn't play it because there was so much freakin' level grinding.[QUOTE="Burning-Sludge"][QUOTE="Galiard"][QUOTE="SirSnafflepuss"]EO is the hardest RPG known to man. GamerJM

I didn't play it because I don't think I like any game in the final fantasy series and I just heard about it's existence today.

yes it does have overpowered monsters, it has 3-8 hour boss battles.
FFXI isn't that great, no offense to those who play it. Sure, it's prettier than WoW but I don't think I could be patient enough to get through all that level grinding. I like feeling like I accomplished something with my playtime.
And that was the great thing about the EOs. Even though I'd need to spend an hour or two here and there to level up, I was always gathering more materials, making money, and exploring further simultaneously. It wasn't wasted time.
And that's my general philosophy on random encounters: They only suck when you feel it isn't getting you anywhere and it feels tedious.

All Final Fantasy games have "overpowered" monsters but are they coming out of the wazoo, or have the ability to kill you in 3 turns or less, or jump into random battles and kill you, or jump into battles with other powerful monsters and help them kill you?
