A lot of people think Animal Crossing is nothing more than a remake of the original with a microphone to make everyone buy the same game over again, and, well.... it is. But fans of Nintendo shouldn't really be shocked by this. I think in the medium of video games its a lot more noticable than it has been in the past, but Nintendo has been shelling out remakes for over a decade.
1. NES to Gameboy Color ports- The only one that really comes to mind is Mario Deluxe, which was an exact port of the original NES game, but I'm sure there were a few more under my radar.
2. SNES to Gameboy Advance ports- Too many to really name. Zelda, nearly every 2-D Mario game in existance, Donkey Kong, etc.
3. This is the one that really set it in stone... Pokemon Yellow. The first two started not only a popular game franchise, but a craze. Pokemon wasn't a fad, it was a way of life. When I was nine years old, nearly every moment not sleeping or in school was spent playing, collecting, or watching Pokemon. To cash in on this, Nintendo literally threw a new coat of paint on a game that hadn't even been out long enough for people to forget about it, and rereleased it. How many of you bought Pokemon Yellow? I'd bet nearly all of you who had either Red or Blue. I bought it. I loved it. We all got screwed. This trend has followed with every major Pokemon release since. They come out with the two main games, then fix a few things and rerelease it a year or so later. At least with a game like The Witcher, people who had bought the original game already got the update for free.
So, in a nutshell, this is a big reason why Miyamoto is wiping his hind-side with national currency, and the next time you're playing City Folk and wonder why there aren't more new things to do, remember Pokemon Yellow. It all started with that.
