A lot of people think Animal Crossing is nothing more than a remake of the original with a microphone to make everyone buy the same game over again, and, well.... it is. But fans of Nintendo shouldn't really be shocked by this. I think in the medium of video games its a lot more noticable than it has been in the past, but Nintendo has been shelling out remakes for over a decade.

1. NES to Gameboy Color ports- The only one that really comes to mind is Mario Deluxe, which was an exact port of the original NES game, but I'm sure there were a few more under my radar.

2. SNES to Gameboy Advance ports- Too many to really name. Zelda, nearly every 2-D Mario game in existance, Donkey Kong, etc.

3. This is the one that really set it in stone... Pokemon Yellow. The first two started not only a popular game franchise, but a craze. Pokemon wasn't a fad, it was a way of life. When I was nine years old, nearly every moment not sleeping or in school was spent playing, collecting, or watching Pokemon. To cash in on this, Nintendo literally threw a new coat of paint on a game that hadn't even been out long enough for people to forget about it, and rereleased it. How many of you bought Pokemon Yellow? I'd bet nearly all of you who had either Red or Blue. I bought it. I loved it. We all got screwed. This trend has followed with every major Pokemon release since. They come out with the two main games, then fix a few things and rerelease it a year or so later. At least with a game like The Witcher, people who had bought the original game already got the update for free.

So, in a nutshell, this is a big reason why Miyamoto is wiping his hind-side with national currency, and the next time you're playing City Folk and wonder why there aren't more new things to do, remember Pokemon Yellow. It all started with that.

You're right, the mic was the only thing added to the new AC.. nothing else, just that Wii Speak.

It's business and people - including myself - keep falling for it. And now Nintendo has a whole new group of people to start the cycle over with again. I think it would be a smart move for Nintendo to make sure whatever title they choose for their next console has the word Wii in it. Super Wii, Wii 2, Wii plus, Wii Squared, Wii Wii... people will buy it. Though I know for a fact Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was not a direct port. They included all the lost levels, put in a challenge mode, and even a Boo Race mode along with other goodies.

Well, there are plenty of companies who do this sort of thing. Square Enix comes to mind.

While it is true that much potential is lost when making a new game (Animal Crossing: City Folk, for example), not all remakes/ports/rehashes are bad. Take your Pokemon example: Yellow, while technically the same game, had differences. It was the first game to allow you to get all of the original starters within the same game. Plus, you started with Pikachu, which is something different. These days, the third game in a Pokemon generation are usually the ones who do some of the more major updates. Take Emerald, it introduced Battle Frontier and it added things from FireRed/LeafGreen. So, they aren't as direct as before.

That being said, I do like getting new game instead of just getting remakes.

It's the same with the Madden, NFL, PES, FIFA etc games. There's a new game every year but it only has minor changes and new rosters. Loads of those games are sold every year, so will just keep doing that, even though it would be much more logical to make one new revolutionary game with perfect gameplay and distributing the new players and rosters as downloadable content.

Indeed.I own it,and as far as I'm concerned,it is the definitive version of the game. Not a good comparison here.

For starters I don't feel like I got ripped off. I bought it knowing well what I was buying. I've learned to wait for reviews from the people who buy g from release. I think thats the problem with gaming though. Back when I started as a young gamer of 2 or 3, there were very little very little resources to research games and figure out what they were all about. No that we have these resources I feel like everyone uses them incorrectly. Someone sees a picture of a game and immediately start building this idea of what the game is without actually knowing. Then others read these ideas, think they are credible and all of a sudden games like Animal Crossing are put on this mountain and everyone sits around like "This is gonna be awesome" or "I saw a picture of the game and its gonna be the best game ever." I think gamers need to keep their research in check and remember that when you build up a game, hell anything, with that much hype. You are bound to have some disappointment. Every game that I have ever bought has been hard to trade in and sell because I made good choices and the game was exactly what I wanted. Sorry for anyone who bought it and doesn't like it or is offended by what I said. I meant no harm. Thats just hoow I feel.

Also, on the topic of shelling games to bring them to the next gen system. I think its brilliant. If a game sells well for one generation why not try it out on the next. Like when they brought out the classics for the Gameboy Advance. SOme of the people who owned GBAs might have had some new game of Mario but never played the orignal and see where it all started. I think gamers are put in perspective when you can play Super Mario Bros. on the same console as Super Mario Galaxy and they can see how far we've come in gaming. Maybe not as far as other systems but the games remain loyal and why change what works right?

Hope I didn't offend anyone. I like peace among gamers. :)

i think you should feel ripped off, while other companies are breaking themselves in half to make original content for the ps2, ps3, x360, nintendo just sits around and doesn't do really a whole lot..... this in my opinion is just lazy... it may be smart businesss wise, but i feel a company as revered as nintendo really needs to step up their game with some new concepts. THAT was and hopefully will STILL be the whole point of the Wii when the motion plus is released... fingers crossed ...

Super Mario Galaxy had some new concepts in it.. But alas, you're right... Nintendo has done NOTHING this gen that is new, just rehashed last gen over again.

Well said. The tools are there, they must be used intelligently. And if you've already played a game that will be rereleased, nobody will make you buy it again. Can't feel ripped off if you don't buy it. It's time to buy 3rd party games. Encourage the devs that are working hard to bring you new original games. @ manicgigantic You say that other companies are working hard to make games for the ps2, ps3, x360 while Nintendo is siting on its butt rehashing, but keep in mind Nintendo is not the only company releasing games on Wii. You can't really make that comparison, it's fundamently a flawed comparison. But still I get what you're saying, and it's true enought. Bottom Line: Buy 3rd Party Games! If you feel ripped off don't buy 1st party games that you've already played on a previous gen console. Peace

I can't say that I felt ripped-off, but I do still feel disappointed with the whole thing.

Good game, but far, far, below it's potential.
