Some stores if they are the 24 variety and have sense will direct you to a waiting area with chairs then bring the units to you. It's getting a lot better but a lot of people still have to camp out an hour or two if a shipment is known to be coming to the stores because these shipments are advertised in the newspaper, mailed ads etc. So everyone who wants a wii will come at that time.
I'm in the UK, it works a little differently here. We only had people doing the overnight stuff, or waiting until the store opened on launch day. Most people seem to try one of two methods, either order online from one of the major dealers and hope they get an allocation or go around the local stores (typically Game/Argos/ASDA (Walmart)/ToysRus and others) and ask when they're expecting to have some Wiis in stock.
In my case I asked at Game one weekend and they said they were expecting some the following Friday at about midday. So I went there on Friday at midday and got one, which was quite lucky since they were selling fast, they didn't offer pre-order or tickets for people who wait in advance.
