How do you like the Wii version. I been playing it and online and what drags it down for me is the luck factor how its made much easier for those in last. I been playing mario kart for the ds last few days and for me personally that version tops wii version. I know the Wii added alot of fun and belive me i cant put it down, but it just seems like they simplified it also. Anyone else agree....im not knocking game either i just wish they had a mode for like old style play with more skill over luckSumotaii
No matter how skilled you are at driving, there's a chance you're going to get blown up by 3 blue shells before the finish line. I agree, there's a lot of luck in the game now. But isn't that what Mario Kart is about? It's about not knowing what's next, it's about using the items to win.
People keep complaining about the items and how it puts them at an unfair advantage. Let me ask you this: Would it still be Mario Kart without items?
I personally don't think so. If that was the case, I'd go play any other racing game on the market.
Now don't take offense, you're probably a "snaker" from Mario Kart DS. Being able to beat just about anyone except when you're challenged by other snakers. That's nice and all but... that's not Mario Kart. You probably feel disadvantaged now because you can't race the way you're used to. Mario Kart DS isn't old school. If you play OLD SCHOOL mario games you'll know how much you rely on items to win.
So rambling over, don't play Mario Kart if you can't live with the items.

I like the ds version better and don't snake (probably just because I love Mario Kart on the go).I actually don;t know much about snaking. I just play the ds version for fun to or with friends at times. I use to play Mario Kart in the Super Nes, N64 days. I personally never got to into the GBA and Cube version although double dash seemed really fun. I just mean like in older versions if your in 2nd place or such theres still chance to get red shells and stuff, now it seems if your up there your getting bombed with items. Sumotaii
Double Dash was my favorite. lol

In the N64 version, there was a good chance that you'd get big items in second place, like lightning and super mushrooms. But the seven other AI racers would rarely get those weapons, no matter what position they were in. The older games, especially the N64 version, gave a huge advantage to human players in terms of items.
The major difference with the Wii version is that you're playing against eleven other human players online. The DS version only has a max of four at a time (though I'm not sure how many friends you can play against at once). The developers had to come up with a good balance of helping the people in the back while allowing the people in the front to keep the lead if they're good enough. It's definitely not perfect, but it's pretty damn close if you ask me. Considering all the variables, the online play of the Wii version is incredible.
As for "old styIe play" that was more skill than luck compared to the Wii version... that's simply not accurate. If Mario Kart 64 had been online with the same exact weapons system as in its Grand Prix mode, it would be absolute pandemonium. Everyone but the leader, no matter what place, would be getting blue shells, stars, lightning, and super mushrooms most of the time. That game was programmed to give human players an insanely unfair advantage in terms of items. Super Mario Kart was the same way, since the AI could only use their personalized weapons and nothing else.
People who are good at Super Circuit, the GBA version, rely more on skill than with any of the other games. You have a DS... buy Super Circuit. It has the gameplay of Super Mario Kart (and all of the SNES tracks as unlockables) plus some of the enhancements of Mario Kart 64 (drift boosting, newer weapons, more weapons).
Remember, when you're playing online, there's a good chance that at least one or two other racers are going to be much better than you at the game. Your best chance of beating those people is to get insanely good. Some people have VR rankings of 8000+. That's not due to luck; it's skill. There are a ton of intricacies to the game; figure them out, use them, and you'll have much more fun.

Hat = Tipped To You.
As I have said before in a previous post.. items are one thing.. I dont like the advanage 1st place has.. it is difficult to catch up to the leader when you are being pelted by red shells and items the people right behind you are getting. Get a good enough lead off the start and you should remain there for the rest of the race as the 2nd and 3rd place people are demolished by items.Sabin55
Two words: Blue Shell
i like it, i mean the n64 version sucked if you were in the back , you rarely get back to the front,
wii ds gc snes and gba at least were good , and they gave you a chance to get backto the front,
online is a very different story, i hate it to a t at least on the ds , people snake to much to lag it so bad
Oh yeah, I guess I forgot to mention Super Circuit huh?
Great game, balanced items, some fun AI, all the classic tracks and music, Tight controls, and it's portable. This should be a buy on your list. I remember some great races where I edged out computer opponents by milliseconds. Super Circuit is also the first and only MK to be made by other than a Nintendo R&D, it was made by Intelligent Systems, which is probably why it's so skill based compared to the others.
I've been playing Mario Kart for a long time, and I've played every version except the GBA one. I have never been a huge fan, but I still enjoy them quite a bit.
In my opinion, Mario Kart Wii is the best version yet. I feel all of the others are pretty much the same, with a new item here, and a new track design idea there.

very good point and it is mostly people that relied on snaking on the DS version that will be complaining
Well I have a rating over 8100 online, and I think skill still plays a big factor. Sometimes I'm so far ahead, it doesn't matter how many blue shells hit me. :P
But I wish more skill was involved, because I've lost a few games due to getting destroyed right before the finish line by a blue shell, two red shells, and someone with a star.

Indeed! Personally, this is the most fun I have ever had with mariokart. I've played them all since super MK first came out, but MKwii (especially online) is just a blast.
Quick Question: What is snaking?zeriva
Snaking is when you pull off continuous drift boosts during straightaways (and pretty much everywhere else). This isn't really possible in most areas in the Wii version because of the different method of drift boosting. The only place I ever do it is right after the lap marker on Delfino Square, but it doesn't really help that much. The DS version allows for snaking more so than any other version, and people take advantage of that when you play online.
