Link: Read the interview, the reason why Nintendo went toward "casuals" isi at the bottom of the page.

"I think that there's probably one other element to it, and that's that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where - and certainly Nintendo included - catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more ...an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we're still working on many of those titles, but it's just not the type of event where we'll be showcasing that anymore."

I'm suprised no one has seen this yet.

That's probably it, but honestly, who actually comes to the conference and who keeps track of watching a video game conference on TV? The real gamers, which Nintendo completely ignored. Casual gamers who only play games like Wii Fit and Wii Sports don't keep track of E3 and have better things to do than go to the video game conference.

The ones that care about good games are the ones that pay attention to E3. Nintendo screwed up on that one.

Wow that article makes perfect sense but i'd have to agree with kamakun that E3 is still an even for "hardcore" gamers so they should cater that even towards "hardcore" gamers and find another way to show "casuals" Wii music and Wii Fit...commercials work pretty well so why do they need E3?

The reason they need E3 is because it soon hits the news and press. People talk about how there was a conference and such and these games were announced. Wii Music, Wii Sports Resort! Nintendo gets all the media attention because they appealed more to the general audience.

I'm starting to give up hope though, they'll never make a headset to talk online, or make a hardrive. I think they will keep mostly everything the same and add minor changes like: wiispeak, wiifit, or motion plus. But who knows they might.

magazine publishers and TV reporters like Fox, ABC, etc go there. They report it in the magazines and on TV and stuff then BAM, E3 just reached the casual audience

That's stupid. How many true casuals would even bother to watch E3? It's mostly only the hardcore that even know what E3 is.

It's not about watching it, it's about who comes to the conference.

Tons of news stations and magazines go, and then, when their stories hit, bam! E3 has come to the casuals, a bit late, but it has still come to them.

Now we hardcore gamers will find out about a hardcore game, with or without a big conference.

So why not give the media the stuff they want, and give us the stuff we want at a more conveniant time?

This was poster earlier but within one day it went all the way to like the 4th or 5th page, probably because people are to busy complaining.

I think we should look at E3 from a different perspective. The "core gamer" does his research on games, and sometimes we can even discover a game is being made before it is officially announced. When we hear a rumor, we pounce on it, research it, yada yada yada. We are already aware of whats going on in the gaming business, or at least, to an extent.

On the other hand. what about the casual player? The casual player will probably just peek at his sunday flyers or look at whats in the store, and not research as far in depth as we do. Case in point, in March, my friend, who is a casua,l said he was not getting a wii because it did not have mario kart, to which I told him dude it was announced last year to come out in like April. The casual is not as aware as we are

So, how do you make those casuals more aware of their casual games? Hrrrmm.... theres this huge event, and while it has been dumbed down, all these media outlets cover it, and the press is rampant. There is a chance casuals may hear in on E3. So why not show off your casual stuff at the biggest press event for video games.

Ninty wants to use E3 to spoon feed the casuals, which is a shame, imo becasue they promised to use key franchise, and we only saw a casual/hardcore style game in animal crossing.

I think this is signaling the end of megatons at E3 forever, On a side note, in that gamespot article where microsoft mentions it was the one who pulled the plug on bungie at E3 for time contraints, they mentioned they wanted it to be presented at a more dedicated event. Wonder what that meant...

When their stories hit, bam? Who are their stories going to hit? Video games aren't going to get much coverage with major news outlets, so casuals aren't going to see any of this. Only magazines like GI will get enough attention to get the news out, but the casuals that get GI are the type that play a lot of games anyway. Seriously, 2 or 3 months from now, ask a non-gaming girl or adult (that has recently started playing games due to the Wii/DS) if they know about what happened at E3. They won't have a clue in hell what you're talking about.

They have kinda said that a few times throughout everything, but most people probably didn't catch it. It was an okay approach, but they spent too much time on sales, and only announced like two good games. We can only hope that they release some big games this year as 'unexpected surprises'.

I think it's just, they already used casual games to get new people interested in games, and now they are using them at E3 to get new people to follow the E3 reports every year. Maybe.

Which roughly translates to "we've got the goods, we just didn't show them." I can live with that. A crappy E3 is much better thana crappy lineup ofgames from Nintendo.

Some other places have covered this, but Nintendo has said that they aren't using E3 as such an announcment-central as others are. At least Animal Crossing: City Folk has gameplay video and a release date now.

I am a casual gamer. I come on this site maybe once a month. Last year both wii fit & super mario kart wii appealed to me. The year before that it was Mario Galaxy & Smash bros. Even metroid got me excited.

This year e3 seemed rather lackluster.

There are 2 games I really want to see.

1) a new motion controled Punch out for the Wii

2) a new excite bike for the Ds.

With the popularity of these 2 games on the VC I don't understand why these games haven't been announced.

Here is hoping for the future.

Fox is at E3, CNN is at E3, even my local newspaper was at E3. Even though core gamers were the ones watching E3, people that can get the word out to casuals were also at E3. Like most people though, I still feel we should've seen atleast one core game.
