Mario Kart has a very active map feed from the disc itself, which means your processor, the laser and the fan on the console will be working a bit more than other games. Metroid Prime and the Super Mario Galaxy games also have this effect on the console. It's not a problem, but just about any game with a 3D map, especailly a large one that needs to process quickly will be reading from the disc a lot.
Does this only happen when you are playing Mario Kart Wii online, or does it happen while playing other games as well? If it's only happening with this game online, I would blame your internet connectivity.
If not, it makes me wonder if someone sold the console on ebay due to this problem.
If your console is set up on top of or near other electronic devices like VCR's, cable boxes, Stereo equipment or near a heat source of any kind, you should consider moving it away from the heat source so it can cool properly. Heat slows down the processing capability of any computerized device, quite a bit.
Here is what I would do in your shoes;
Make sure the console is away from a heat source. If it is, try playing Mario Kart Wii online with it set up away from the heat source it was nearby and see if it does the same thing. If it does, I would then try playing the same game, offline and if it still has freezing problems, I would see if it does the same thing with another game, entirely.
I'm willing to bet it's your internet connectivity. This had happened to me before Iadjusted a few things on my modem and computer to upmy mbps rate. If you don't have a security code on your connection, anyone else using your wireless connection can slow your bandwidth, especially live feeds on cable boxes and other gaming consoles.
