Before the Wii was announced, everyone had known a new Nintendo console was soon to be released, but nobody had known what it was called. Eventually, it got the name "Revolution", and for a while, that's what everyone thought it was going to be. Then we found out it's real name: Wii. Honestly, I don't have a problem with it. But even more honestly, I think revolution would have been a better name. It's bolder, yet still has a comfortable sound to it. Also, I think that if it were named Revolution, then we Wii owners would be getting a lot less crap from *you know who*(I can't say it without getting suspended)

No one thought it was going to be named the Revolution

Nintendo always has two names for their systems, one during development and one for release. Everyone was waiting on what the console would be called once it was to market, they knew it wasn't keeping the Revolution name.

As for the name? Wii is better because it's unique to the console and Nintendo, go on any search engine and type that in and Nintendo pops up

"Revolution" was merely a codename for the console, much like "Kitana" was for the Dreamcast and "Dolphin" was for the GameCube, to name a couple of the more recent codenames. The only difference between that of the Wii's and the other consoles was that it gave birth to the assumption that the Wii itself would indeed by revolutionary, but it just served the purpose that most codenames do.

To the system's credit, the name "Wii" has become synonomous with video games this gen, and I don't think that "Revolution" could have had the same level of draw to it. As far as its perception goes, the name of the system has nothing to do with how it's being treated right now by anyone. If "Revolution" had the same library of games, the same would get the same reaction from people, for better or worse.

Think of how Apple makes iPhones, iPods and such the Wii has 2 "i"s so it makes it better for public perception :p. All kidding aside I don't mind the name, I just didn't know how to say it the first time I read what it would be called.

i'm pretty sure that revolution was widely known as a codename. Ahh, i remember way back when. I prety much joined gamespot to talk about the nintendo revolution and tales of symphonia. Of course, its been so disappointing after all this hype... but what has been disappointing with all the hype. everything. the pc, the ps3, the 360... sigh, now im sad :'( but nice flashbacks to my first time seeing the wiimote :D

EDIT: woops, meant to say everything has been disappointing XP

If the Wii was called the Revolution, fanboys would just be complaining about how unrevolutionary it is.

I think they called it "Wii" because it's pronounced the same in all languages. And we all know how Nintendo likes to spread their sales across the world! :P

i agree.. it would be the same..they will still find ways to make fun and use the word revolution in a funny way.

however i admit it does sound slightly more manly than wii. i dont mind either way.

Wii is easier to pronounce world wide, by people who speak a variety of languages, then "Revolution" is.

Revolution just sounds more intimidating, and that's not good in recruiting new gamers.

Well, sicne we are on the topic look on the back of any Nintendo brand wii controller and you'll see RVL - for revolution; similarily you will see DOL- for dolphin on gamecube controllers; just something interesting I learned of.

I remember laughing my butt off in April 2006 when the official name was finally announced. Now though it just fits. If anything the name Revolution just sounds pretentious now.
