Can Gamecube game files be save in the Wii's built in memory? Or do I need to go and buy a gamecube memory card?

You need a GameCube memory card.

You need a Gamecube controller plus memory card

The Wii becomes a Gamecube when you play the games, nothing will work like the Wiimote or SD card
