I don't know your girlfriend's personallity.. You know best what she would like, you're her boyfriend. I wouldn't go for nintendogs..because it gets boring after a while. Personally, I like the phoenix wright series.
Pretty much every girl gamer that I know prefer the hardcore stuff such as things with violence and all that. Ask her what kind of games she likes, and maybe you'll get a clue.
its hard to give out an advice coz i really don't know what your gf is into ... N+, Zelda, and Space Invaders Extreme might work too.

Great recs here! I second the ones in bold. I'm a girl, but I'm a gamer. Does your GF game a lot or will it be her first handheld? If it's her first handheld get her Animal Crossing. For the replay value,longevity, and learning curve is very easy to pick up. It's cute too, so she will love it. It's the only game you'll need for a while.
