Perhaps you should read the other reviews where the game scored much higher. Lots of people are removing EGM, Gamespot, 1up do to shoddy game reviews

I don't care. It sounds like my kind of game maybe, so I'm going to play it, tonight. If I end up liking it, I am going to doubt all gamespot scores.

yeah, I take gamespot reviews with a grain of salt. I look at the player reviews to get a different perspective. A lot of times, my favorite games got low scores

There seemed to be a significant amount of anticipation in this forum for this game. Initial user reviews that I encountered were overwhelmingly positive as well.

Whenever Gamespot previews a game, they primarily focus on positive aspects of gameplay, graphics, sound design, etc. The language they use sometimes mirrors whatever press release accompanied the game's announcement. I'm not sure this amounts to hype, but I am learning to be less trusting of their initially optimistic tone. Once they actually do a full review, only then do they temper their initial interest with balanced criticism.

Maybe my perceptions are to blame, but when I keep seeing this disconnect between their preview and review, it makes it seem like either the preview was overly positive or the review was overly negative.

For example:

Spectrobes Preview-"The game thankfully doesn't shove a ponderous amount of story down your throat"
Spectrobes Review-"...brain-dead characters and by-the-numbers storyline"

Wario Preview- "...between the different costumes, the multitude of minigames, and the various puzzle solving, it seems like there will be a lot of variety here"
Wario Review- "...the same situations and minigames are recycled to the point that your brain will go numb"

I noticed that too in the Wario: Master of Disguise preview and review.

It also probably depends on the reviewer's personal tastes. From what it sounds like on the forum for Spectrobes, some people like the way the game is designed, and others can't stand it. It's impossible to get a review that doesn't have a bias, simply because everyone is different and has different tastes for what they like to see in a game.

Let me remind you that certain Disney products have been a success, even in the game world. Take into account the highly successful Kingdom Hearts franchise. The Disney part seemed to throw people off in the beginning, but after playing through them, you realize how much you've missed out because of biased thoughts. In the meantime, I find Gamespot to be giving fair and more or less accurate reviews. I read through them attentively, and I have come to notice that the score reflects more or less the enjoyment level of the "majority" of players. Take into account, for example, Diddy Kong Racing DS. For some players, it is a great DS title, but for the majority of those who have tried DDKR DS, it sunk low to a disappointment. For that, they scored 6.7 (not saying they scored it based on player interests), appropriately demonstrating that this game may not satisfy most gamers' expectations. It's been a pattern I've recently observed in Gamespot's reviews, and it is interesting to note : the higher the score, the more the pool of gamers enjoying that particular title rise. A score of 9.0 and up for example satisfies pretty much 90% of people who were interested in picking up the title (90% taken arbitrarily), whereas 7.0 and down seem to interest 50% of users and well, the other half lose their taste...

And just like GS's majority of biased opinions, yours is no different. If you read the review you can see the one-sided opinions in the review. A lot of people have put the game down before they picked it up, just because of the one sided opinions. I'd seriously play the game before you judge it.
