First off, FF XII: Revenant Wings is still being made. Second off, GameStop is too legitimate to do something like that. They might sell openen games, but they won't be used. This would happen if you take the last one in the store, which would be the display box they leave empty so no one could steal the actual disc. They'll even ask you if you want your game shrink-rapped if that happens.JAB991I see. OK, but I heard from one guy on this forums say that some of the gamestop people there take games from the store and play them, then do something like return them and sell them as new.
And I was saying the PlaynTrade guy was lying, not the gamestop guy.hydralisk86
It's possible the Play n Trade guy was lying. I just answered the question in the title. Did the clerk at GameStop check if it was used or if the game was being produced? I don't see how anyone could know 100% that it's new unless it's in its original shrink rap.
Yes it's completely true
Gamestop opens games and then sells you the opened game at full retail price. They say it's for security reasons but the real reason is that they're able to sell off used stock as new.
Gamestop also rewraps games all the time. There's countless examples of how people have purchased a cartridge based game that's been shrink wrapped and there's been old game saves already on the cart.
They also sell a good number of counterfeit games because they never teach employees how to look for them.
All in all there is no valid reason to ever shop there. They're made for the novice or "casual" gamer who doesn't know how to shop for games. They're made for the grandmother who needs to buy her grandson a game and goes to "GAME STORE" to get it done.

I wouldn't say that. As long as you keep a watchful eye you should be fine. i mean hey its better than buying from Wal-Mart.

Sadly I don't have a Circuit City or Best Buy were I live. I also love buying used gba games lol. There is no wait as well.Gamestop is trash and should be someone's last resort to buying a video game.
I remember I bought Clubhouse Games from them and they gave it to me in an open case. I swear I thought it was some kind of joke. I was just waiting for someone to come along and go "wait, sir! I'm so sorry but we accidentally sold you a used copy instead." Why someone would sell opened games is beyond me.
I've also heard terrible stories from people who shopped at Gamestop. Like one guy who bought a used copy of The World Ends with You and it was actually Brain Age game with the sticker peeled off and stuck on with The World Ends with You's sticker.
But I have heard from someone who told me that they're employees are entitled to taking home games and playing them. But I think that was for used games, not new.

Wait, sorry for not knowing why, but why is walmart that bad?I never liked what Gamestop does. The reason why the games are open is because it's the last copy, and they're using the box for display. It's called a "gutted copy."
This is terrible for many reasons, especially for discs. I bought a few gutted games where the discs had a lot of smudges and scratches on it. It's still new and never have been played, or so they say. Who knows if some of the employees took it home and played them.
Anyway, the only time I ever buy gutted is when it's rare game and if it's in descent condition. Other than that, I go to the major stores where they're nice and sealed.
It would make no sence really to sell used games as new ones, they would be loosing money that way. Gamestop/EB make the majority of the money from used sales, they give you $35 for a recently released game, and sell it for $54. But there are cases where it does happen, what do you think the interactive games are? retail copies that, after played by everyone in the store for 2 weeks, gets sold as new, "thuroughly tested" they say.
As for the gutted games, how else are they supposed toput games on display? the only other options would be to put everything behind glass like Wal-mart does, but its a whole store, so it would be really stupid to do so, and to have fake cases of the games on the walls, but where are they going to keep all the sealed copies? I know the store I work at is really small and we try to keep all the sealed copies we can sealed, but it gets to be much of a hassle when you have piles of games right behond you.

You have that backwards
Pokemon Diamond is 34.99 new
Pokemon Diamond is 29.99 used
If they sell a used game as new they make 5 dollars more money in that case.

They make more then 5 dollars jayson. They get 100% of the profit selling used games.
i have never been asked if i want a game shrink-wrapped if it is new, but opened. i personally hate when this happens and highly doubt it is always the last copy that they have. anyway, maybe my gamestop stinks, but this happens all the time to me. the only time i ever get a shrink-wrapped, unopened game from them anymore is for pre-orders.agrippiWell, think about it.. its more work for them to get the demo box, get the game that belonged in it, and then pull a new game + box.. why would they do that instead of just selling you a different one. Use your head, not everything is a conspiracy.
OOOH!
I have to comment on this..
Last year when the remake of FF6 came out I was going to buy it at my local Gamestop. The copy was opened.
Im surprised no one has posted this yet, maybe its really something the general public does not know. If the gamestop you shop at was previously a Funco Land/EB/Software Etc then the employees are allowed to open one copy of all games in store and take it home to play amongst employees.
I know this because a few years ago I worked as a holiday hire at the Software Etc in my local mall. At the time employees were allowed to pass around what was termed "a store copy" of every game in stock. You know when you go into gamestop and sometime the clerk has to go into the drawer of game discs in paper sleaves, those are the games they get to play.
OK, so back to purchasing FF6...
So I told the clerk I wanted a copy he said they had only one left in stock. As he was ringing up my "brand new" game I realized it was open. Informed him i did not want a used copy, he said it wasnt used... I then told him that I was aware employees are allowed to take home the games, and blanking out the saves doesnt = brand new. The employee i was dealing with denied that GS employees are allowed such a privelage. During this dispute another employee had come out of the back store room, probably the current shift manager, who overheard our conversation and spoke up saying that in fact Gamestop employees are allowed to take home copies of any game in stock to play. Seeing that I had caught then trying to pass off used goods as new he offered to sell me the copy at the current used price, I declined and went to best buy where they had FF6 in stock and not already opened and played.
They should really change the way they handle gutted games. A new game should never have scratches on it or be in used condition, even though no one played them.
Or they should start giving discounts on the last new gutted copies, because the way they're doing it now is very poor and it kind of ticks you off after awhile.
Can you recommend some good places to shop for videogames?Yes it's completely true

Unfortunately, Gamestop does sell opened new games. It's called gutted, and they do this with the last copy of a game so they can use it as a display box. It's not too bad, however, I'm hearing nasty things about Gamestop employees taking these games home to try them out AND that it's company's policy that they can. Now that really bugs me.
But even if it is never played, no one should pay full price for a gutted new game. The whole point in new is the comfort of opening up a brand new, factory sealed game and having everything untouched. I hate gutted boxes because they have those icky price stickers on them, etc. And a lot of the discs are scratches or smudged, almost worse than some used games. And to top it all off, they sell it for full price!
I really hate Gamestop's way of doing things. They do this with PC games as well.
good places to buy games are @ walmart, costco, circuitcity, and bestbuy. At ALL of these places, you CAN return your games, even if you just dont want them, and it can be opened. At gamestop, you can only return it if its defective. i really hate gamestop.:xClipperstownActually, you can't return them for a refund, only exchange them for the same item. I never could return anything. You must've gotten lucky and dealt with a employee who didn't care to follow the rules.
