I wanted to get a list going for them that way when and if I ever get to backtracking through my ps1 and ps2 rpgs backlog I'd have them ready sitting on a shelf.

a few I know I plan to get off hand would be mario and luigi, radiant historia, the world ends with you, devil survivor, and not really rpgs but 9 hours persons doors and phoenix wright and proffessor layten series.

The GBA and DS Castlevanias(6 in total) are all excellent. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is also an excellent GBA game.

GBA: I hear the Fire Emblem games are great, Lunar Legend, Breath of Fire 1 and 2, Golden Sun, Advance Wars games, Super robot Taisen, riviera the Promised Land, Yggrda Union... I hear those are ones checking out but I haven't played them myself. The only one I've played so far is Final Fantasy VI Advance, that's great. Check out the others too, IV and V. Also, Final Fantasy Dawn of souls, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance...

DS: Radiant Historia is an excellent choice, one of the best games I've ever played, Knights in the Nightmare is my favorite game from this generation (it's like Bullet Hell mixed with RTS. Read up about it before playing as there is a steep learning curve but the game is really incredible especially in the story department), Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story is awesome, Dragon Quest IX is like a godsend for JRPG fans since there's so much content and customization, Dragon quest V and VI are supposed to be great (have them but haven't played through them yet), Final Fantasy IV is great if you like old school stuff, Chrono Trigger is a must play if you've never played it before and if you don't mind some flaws check out Sonic Chronicles the Dark Brotherhood. Go into it with an open mind. I enjoyed the game. Also, if you like ARPG's, try out Lunar Knights and Solatorobo. Both are great in their own ways. (I wrote a review of Solatorobo if you're interested.)

Other games that are supposed to be good but I have yet to play are Super Robot Taisen Endless Frontier, Final Fantasy A2 Grimoire of the Rift, Final Fantasy 4 Heroes of Light, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, Etrian Odyssey 1 2 and 3 (although those are supposed to be majorly old school) and the rune Factory Harvest Moon games.

hope this helps.

The Mario & Luigi for GBA is better than the DS games imho... so I would be sure to get that. Summon Night: Swordcraft Story is a cool little action-RPG dungeon crawler... with lesbian undertones if you pick the female character (and especially the Sugar familiar) which I found entertaining, lol.

Both Fire Emblems are great but The Sacred Stones is story on a whole other level. Breath of Fire of simple old-school RPG at it's finest. Riviera: The Promised Land was good, except for some reason when I played it on GBA and then on PSP(the two versions are mostly the same except magic effects are a bit shinier on PSP), I just ran out of steam at the same point near the end... Tell me about the combat system in Radiant Historia- I've considered getting it a few times, but frankly I'm intimidated by the convoluted-sounding storyline. Combat is always a big motivator for me, though.

I found the reused background art to be particularly exhausting.... never got more than 4 or 5 hours through the game (PSP).

My favorite so far have been the two Golden Sun games. It is very much in the old-school 16-bit style so if you like that sort of thing, they are right up your alley.

Golden Sun and it's sequels, Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem Sacred Stones (Shadow Dragon isn't bad if you're a fan of the series too), Riviera: The Promised Land, Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced and it's sequel, Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon, Lunar Legend, Chrono Trigger... all of those are my favorite RPGS pretty much, and I would definitely recommend all of them.

The combat is played out in a three by three grid, with enemies taking up sqaures on the grid. You use skills to move enemies around so that they're on top of eachother then you use an uber powerful attack (I used a powerful magic spell) to do as much damage to as many enemies as possible. One of the great things about it is that you can basically have a winning party consisting of any characters... you find combos that work to suit your play styIe then use them! It's always involving (in that you can't just mash the attack button to succeed... every battle requires some thought) and it remains fresh throughout.

Also the story isn't quite as bad as it sounds. It's easy for the most part to follow and it gets to be amazing near the end... especially if you do all the sidequests, the ending is aweomse. The characters are all well developed. No one is left on the sidelines to be an emotionless drone. The mian character may seem cliche at first but he'll surprise you at the end.

Dang it, you just made me buy it. :| I already have to finish Tales of the Abyss and I haven't even started Xenoblade yet. ^___^ I've never had a backcatalog this big before.

Knights in the Nightmare- It is a weird hybrid shooter strategy rpg. The artwork is gorgeous and gameplay is deep. The only setback is the learning curb. There is a tutorial you go through but it is loooong (mispelled for effect). Strange Journey- a SMT title, I liked it more than Devil Survivor. The story has an awesome sci-fi feel to it. Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass- OK, there is a debate whether Zelda games are rpgs but the fact remains that it at least has a similar feel. The only caveat is if you hated Majora's Mask (Never played it myself), you will likely not like this one also since you are racing against the clock when going through a certain dungeon multiple times. Golden Sun Dark Dawn- Personally, I think this is one of the best rpgs on the DS. You don't need to have completed the 2 prequels before it since it is a new cast of characters. It has a lot of humor but it doesn't overwhelm the seriousness that the game portrays. They updated the graphics for the DS and since it was a title late in the DS's life, the graphics are top notch. Blue Dragon 2- I thought the game was OK. The neat thing about this game is that it is a real time strategy rpg. Dragon Quest IV, V, VI, and IX- It's Dragon Quest..nuff said!

Well the good thing is that RH isn't quite as long as other RPG's... the sidequests aren't as numerous (although there are alot) and the main game took me about 35 hours.

Knights in the Nightmare hell yes. Such an amazing game... it's not too difficult to get a grasp for it if you do research online and if you start on Easy. (Just screw your dignity play on Easy first.)

I think Spirit Tracks is a better game than PH despite the train. There were more sidequests, more things to collect, better dungeons, (the Spirit Tower is SSSOOOOO much better since you don't need to repeat what you have played) and is all around a better game. there's even an alternate costume and Boss Rush Mode.

Just some others for you

CIassic RPG

  • Dragon Quest IX
  • Chrono Trigger remake
  • Tales of the Abyss
  • Etrian Odyssey

Strategic/Tactical RPG

  • Final Fantasy XII - Revenant Wings. Real time strategic RPG. Knowledge of FF12 universe not required.
  • Fire Emblem (GBA - actually 7th in the series)
  • Fire Emblem 8 - Sacred Stones
  • Disgea DS
Other
  • The World Ends With You - Took me a while to get used to the dual screen controls and, tbh, I never really got used to it, but the story was fantastic and the music/presentation awesome.
  • Ghost Recon Shadow Wars - Not your traditional swords and magic but a turn based strategy game with levelling, weapons and armor. A very dumbed down SRPG but great fun nonetheless. Surprising for me as I hate the console versions
  • Bowser's Inside Story - more an action styIe turn based game but a really clever and awesome take on the genre.
  • Okamiden - If you like the legend of Zelda games you'll probably like this one. It's right on that border between RPG and action :)

So hard to pick which ones are worthy. There are so many good ones :) Plus I've only had a 3DS since march last year so haven't had a mountain of time to spend on all the great titles!
