great starter games would be... MarioKart DS, MPH, New Super Mario Bros., Animal Crossing: Wild World, Final Fantasy III and Castlevania. Any of them would be good. They're all from different genres too so you get a taste from everything.

Good list. But don't forget that you can also look for GBA games as well.

New! Super Mario Bros. is a rediculously short game, and FFIII is a game that you'll never want to play again after you beat it. I suggest getting Mariokart DS and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow/Portrait of Ruin.
