Getting depressed from intense online gaming -- good single-player?

Title explains it, but what I'm really after are a lot of superb single-player games. For years now I have been sticking with online competitive games, and I have been getting relatively depressed (not just from online games, other reasons as well, but I am sure that this is one of the factors).

Is the 3DS a great console if I'm looking for a multitude of superb, engrossing single-player games?

Sorry if the question sounds a bit weird, but I have never owned a handheld console before, and I would like to stray away from my multiplayer-only gaming life and mostly focus on single-player from this point forward.

Tricky to say really.

Off the top of my head it has had a fair few good single player games (the standout ones being Kid Icarus: Uprising, Resident evil :revelations, super mario 3d land, ghost recon shadow wars and OOT3d in retail and pushmo/pullblox, mighty switch force and vvvvv in download) it hasn't really built up a killer library yet (although I've only included games I've played, others like tales of the abyss I've heard are pretty good).

However it does have backwards compatibility to the DS which did have a load of standout single player games, and since you've never owned a handheld they'd all be fresh to you as well. The virtual console on the 3DS also has a few good GB and GBC games although I've only played links awakening DX edition.

It really depends whether or not the 3DS's games/future lineup interest you or not though as otherwise you could probably just get a DSi and go through the immense backlog of DS games which wold be a bit cheaper, although a new DSi and 3DS aren't too far off in price now I think.

No. I would say go for it just for the decent SP experiences on it, but the best ones are DS games. There you will find some truly awesome SP games. A cheap DS may be a better option.Blabadon

If you like platformers and RPGs than its hard to think of a better modern library than the DS's(even though its technically last gen it's still modern). The 3DS library is still building up but has a number of good games to offer. But if you've never owned a DS than there are a lot of games for you to play.

As I understand, there are a few great SP games on 3DS (Paper Mario, RE: Revelations, Tales of the Abyss) but keep in mind that owning a 3DS gives you access to the vast library of excellent DS games, like Pokemon, Dragon Quest games, and others.
