I think the industry is upset with Nintendo. The Wii and DS are considered technically inferior, but have sold the best out of all other platforms this generation. Third parties gambled and invested in HD. The gaming media hyped up and anticipated the HD era. Along comes the Wii, with it's lack of HD graphics, motion controls, non-dual analog set up, and 'expanded audience' games. It sells like hotcakes, but 3rd parties are unable to get a piece of the pie because they have to play catch up and try to replicate what Nintendo did. Very few succeed, with their 'me too' casual titles and the lack of hardcore titles made 3rd parties timid of releasing such games. It really didn't help when poorly made core titles (mostly ports, but some exclusives) flopped. Indeed that trend has started to change, but it's not enough and it's probably too late for most third parties to benefit from the Wii. MS and Sony lost money because of Nintendo's fast selling platforms and third parties couldn't get a piece of the pie. The gaming media is upset since the Wii doesn't really provide them much to talk about due to their hardcore 'must be HD' audience.
I'm not saying that certain media outlets are biased against Nintendo as a whole, but I do think there are many individuals within those outlets that are. I only consider reviews for games that I'm on the fence about. But if it's a game that has the elements that I like in a game--then no review will change my mind. Other M is one of those games! Day one for me.
Although review scores for Other M all over the place--the content of those reviews are very similar. The likes and dislikes are pretty much all the same with the only difference really being the score. I guess Other M's shortcomings rubbed some reviewers a little harder than others.
