Age of Empires is good, but its turnbased unlike the PC version, which is a RTS. Maybe check out Advance Wars if you'd be interested in Age of Empires. Final Fantasy III and Pokemon are both great long lasting games and you should at least consider them.

hotel dusk is a good 10 + hours. but then you might not want to play it any more after then. FFIII takes ages, and Animal crossing just doesnt even end so one of those

animal crossing is good ALONE for the first week or so, plus you have to take frequent breaks because you run out of stuff to do at one time. after that, you can use the online or wireless play

Children of Mana if you like dungeon crawlers, or Nintendogs.

too much pressure!! If you don't like the game someone chooses for you then it's their fault! Well there's some truth to that; what i'd suggest is go to the reviews page and click on the DS Top games...of all time...and narrow it down to 2 or 3 titles you like and then pick two out of those. ---since you asked though I'd choose from Tony hawk's American Sk8land, Sonic Rush, Elite beat Agents (make sure you have some headphones especially in the car for that one) and Jump Ultimate Stars. The last one is a japanese import but you can go to the 2nd area on the menu called j arena and start playing right away. Also Pink Godzilla in seattle has this import title so you should be able to get it in a couple of days being in WA already.
