Rules: Discuss anything and everything about Golden Sun: Dark Dawn here. Use the spoiler tag for sensitive story discussions.

How to use the spoiler tag: [ spoiler ] text [ /spoiler ]

Just remove the spaces in the brackets and you will get the following:
text
The game is out, and I own a copy! :D I'm about two hours in and I made it to the training grounds, which is completely ridiculous. Especially the boss fights.

The Sun Saga stories are a nice way to recap the events of the previous games. It's good that the developers realized that it's been a while since the last game, so it was necessary to provide a refresher. How they went about doing that is neat.

I think they should have at least put difficulty settings. Whenever there's a GS thread, there's Bruno. :P

I think multiple difficulty modes don't work well in RPGs, because the devs usually don't put much thought into them. All they do is raise the enemy stats (or make your party weaker), and that's about it. No new attacks, no new encounters, etc. At least there's a chance for someone to do those things.

Game scored a little lower than I expected on the reviews. To those who have it...how is it? I want to purchase it when I get a DS anyways, but is it a really a 7.0 game? I'm thinking it's a much better game than that (not that a 7.0 is THAT bad)

Maybe it's just too much like GS 1&2, which I unfortunately haven't played. (Well, I played a little GS1 and it was awesome, but my GBA broke)

I don't think Dark Dawn starts off with a good first impression, and that's due to the unnecessary chatter. I'm hoping the rest of the game isn't like the beginning, but we'll see. Take a look at this, and you'll see what I mean. The vid is very early into the game, so nothing is spoiled.

I'm only a few hours into it but it is a superb game thus far and it seems as it will only get better. Definitely worthy of a score far greater than in the 7 range. I pretty much got emotional when the intro was playing out, the nostalgia had built up the past 7 years or so since I played GS 1 and 2 and hearing the familiar sounds and music as well as seeing the old characters was very pleasant. If you loved the first 2 golden sun games, you will most likely love this one as well. The combat is pretty much the same as the old games, no tampering with a unique formula that worked really well. So based off first impression for myself, id give this game anywhere between a 9-10.

You won't be lost because the game recaps the story of the last two games in two ways:

 1. Through the Sun Saga books
 2. Through the Training Grounds.

#2 is more of an intentional joke, but #1 is cool. Each book is a picture book with small animations; you get cute-looking characters and a summary of the quest at hand. It's not just a wall of text that other RPGs give you when they summarize previous games.

I'm currently playing it right now and I'm really enjoying it so far. The graphics are beautiful. They really captured the original's feel on the DS.

I'm glad the battle system is fast-paced and doesn't drag (like Glory of Heracles), and it's not as boring or dull (as Glory of Heracles). A

lso, the focus on puzzle gameplay over random battles and grinding is a refreshing plus. I think fans of the past games will love it. Newcomers may love it too, but it could be hit or miss.

Either way, I think it's one of the best DS JRPGs, much better than the other niche ones like Nostalgia, Sands of Destruction, Etrian Odyssey, or Suikoden Teirkreis, or even Lufia. The only JRPGs that may be better than Golden Sun are the Dragon Quest games, FFIV remake, Pokemon, Chrono Trigger, Mario and Luigi games, and SMT Strange Journey. But that's some tough competition.

But Golden Sun Dark Dawn is better than the other DS JRPGs, in my honest opinion.

Played 9 hours, got it yesterday.

Awesome game, some time has passed since i liked a game that much. :)

If it's dialogs weren't so long, it would make my Top 2 this year.

the first one was my first medieval fantasy RPG... actually it was my first non-pokemon RPG. played through it 4 times, played the second about two years ago but never got to own it, sadly. isaac has been my avatar since... ever (with the exception of a small hiatus where i was out of isaac sprites and had to use some tales of phantasia ones... mainly Cress, another warrior with orange hair :P) the only reason i don't have dark dawn yet is because the stores here haven't received it yet.

The problem isn't the talking per se, but the reediculous amount of sad/happy/whatever faces, that pile up and make the talking scenes too long.

Yeah, me too.

Or loved. There's just too many of them, and it becomes very annoying. Oh, and you get to use emoticons too. Of course, it doesn't make any difference, only make the talk scenes even more boring, and the others characters always complain, despite which choice you make. -.-

Cant believe GS rated it a 7.5 like IGN. Just reinforces my opinion that reviewer scores are mostly inaccurate and biased, while user scores are far more in sync with the majority of peoples opinions on a game. The only negatives I have with it so far are the ease of combat encounters. Everything else about the game including the engaging puzzles and rich story are thoroughly gripping. I can personally rate my experience as 9.5 right now, but I think objectively it deserves at least an 8.5 from any unbiased reviewer. Any RPG lover would be delighted to have this game in their collection.

beat me to it. http://www.gamespot.com/ds/rpg/goldensunds/review.html but here's the difference: a) i like ricardo torres. b) his review is better written and doesn't feel like he was expecting an action adventure, thus complaining about nonsense stuff. and c) a gamespot 7.5 is worth much more than an IGN 7.5. still lower than i expected, but hey, monster hunter tri is an 8 on gamespot standards and muramasa is a 7. in fact i just finished reviewing it, and it proves my point: he praises the game during the entire review while meticulously explaining how everything is and works. it's pretty clear on his review that dark dawn is a great game.

That certainly is a great point to make. Its true that his review is very positive, I just couldn't understand how it only amounted to a 7.5. I still think it could have been a notch up, like lets negotiate with an 8, haha. Oh well, I guess some praise is better than none at all! Its not like a GS score is going to make me enjoy the game any less after all :)

Anyone else finding the game rather easy? One of the big things that I have found with the first two games is that there was usually a chance to lose in a boss battle. So far I haven't had one that has even felled a character. I'm wondering if there are too many Djinni too early and it is skewing the game to the easy side.

Though I do have to say that I like the puzzles much better in this game, especially the ones at Craggy Peak, really well done.

Can't wait! Gameplay reminds me of FFIV and DGXI.

My thoughts precisely. While the puzzles are still clever, the combat is way too easy. Its really the only thing I have a problem with in the game. You can go through entire "dungeons" or whatever you want to call them and come out with full hp/psynergy even after defeating the boss. I think you are right in the fact that you can obtain far too many djinni early on. When situations like this occur in games It makes me wish there were difficulty settings purely for enemy statistics if nothing else... having to worry about more damage coming in and more hp on the boss would makes things far more interesting in many of the fights, while people new to rpgs or whatnot could still enjoy an easier level of difficulty. Kinda like what they did with FFTA2, only have it available for the first playthrough.

I don't really care as to the difficulty.

I agree. The battles are too easy. Having to figure out how to go on in an area using the psyenergy is a bit challenging which is good. However i hate the fact that some djin can be lost permanently since there are some points in the game that don't allow you to go back. Overall it's an awesome game with good graphics.

It's mentioned quite a lot in the game that the main original characters age at an enormously slow rate, much like the Lemurians but possible slowly.
