I remember the first DKR being very challenging. I'm not surprised that Tropical Freeze is causing some rage as well. Hang in there! :P
I made my way through the first world and died just once during the first boss battle but can definitely see a smooth difficulty curve building up to that point. I'm sure world 2 will be much harder
Got it haven't play it yet..will soon just catching up on animes atm. Good to hear its challenging. :)
It's the best game Nintendo has put out in a looong time :]
This game justifies the superguide, you can't expect very young kids to not get fed up after a while. Happy to say it's never even offered it to me though :]
...Just found out it has no superguide lol, but I don't think I died 7 times anyways.
@Chozofication: My lady friend and I have been enjoying it quite a bit... But seriously to hell with those boss fights, they're a nightmare.

They're amazing... the whole game is perfect, really. It's quickly becoming my favorite game.
Only thing I wish they'd fix is the loading animation judder, the load times aren't bad though
@Chozofication: Yeah, the loading screens are a bit off, but if that's the big bug of the game, I'm glad it's that. It's one hell of a challenge, that's for sure. We made it through the end of the third world and gave up on those awful kung fu baboons. It's a game I see myself replaying at least once.
While the challenge is perfectly fair, and I'm willing to admit my complaints on that end are out of pure frustration, the one thing I can't stand about Nintendo and their platformers is their insistence on assigning like nine moves to two buttons. I can't tell you how many times I've rolled off a cliff or into an enemy when I was trying to fist pound the ground. You've got four face buttons... Effing use them.
Loving it already, cutscenes is ONLY shown on TV, when choose to play on TV!!!!...as it should be! Looks very nice. :)
I just made it up to half way world 3. I've hardly died. I don't find Mario and Donkey Kong games that hard. But I do find them highly enjoyable.
Also, these boss fights are so much better than typical Mario bosses where you hit them 3 times and they're dead. These guys take quite a few hits to kill, and they have variety in the way they attack.

Yeah the judder doesn't hurt the game one bit, it's just jarring
I know what you're saying about the buttons, i've done the same thing a few times.
But if you master the game you won't do that though, heh.
I have watched a lot of world 1 videos on gaming sites and it makes the game seem underwhelming imo, I'm guessing I shouldnt base the game off of what I have seen. I enjoyed the challenge of the original games but watching that footage puts me off.
Having a hard time deciding on whether to get new mario U or DKCTF.

when you watch. are people commentating?
here check out this video...it has gameplay only on a great level with great music...videos dont do the art and music justice.
@KBFloYd: Yeah I agree the last trailer from Nintendo made it look awesome, I watched the giant bomb guys play the first world but they admitted they are jaded and it did look a little boring but it was just first world.
I went ahead and got mario bros U for $43 shipping included off of amazon.
@KBFloYd: The game almost instantly gets a lot harder. Once you get to world 3, you'll be cursing your television.

How is the fur tech? I bet it doesnt look any better than conkers bad fur day reloaded on original xbox
It's funny you should ask, as I recently played Conker Reloaded a month back, thinking that the fur was a lot better looking than it actually is. Don't get me wrong, it looks great for an original Xbox game, but it's not comparison to Donkey Kong on Wii U, fur or otherwise.

Although the fur shading in TF is WAY higher quality, it's actually a very similar technique. That's just the shading though, there are also physics to the fur in TF. Definitely a generational difference all in all.
My real amazement with the graphics besides how detailed it is, is the fact the entire levels are loaded in the memory at once, and how each individual item (banana's, coins etc.) have such a ridiculous amount of detail on them, considering how many can be on screen. Retro is putting the Wii U's hardware to great use, the first game to fully use it really. I'm also surprised it loads as fast as it does.
I'm going to go finish the game right now, it's already my favorite game from the last 10 years :)

If you're not holding a direction on the analog stick or d-pad, you'll never roll. I had to consciously retrain myself into the habit of letting go of the direction before trying to pound. You don't need to wait for DK to stop, just put a sliver of time between letting go and pressing the button, and you're golden every time.
Not aiming this next comment at you at all, but I'm reminded of all the people who blamed their mistakes on the motion controls in Returns. Tropical Freeze has no motion controls, yet people are still having a difficult time with it, as far as I can tell. I never had any issues at all with the motion controls in Returns, so I'm starting to think some people were just looking for excuses.
Normal controls should've been an option, but it wasn't difficult to get used to the controls that were there.
@JordanElek: Oh, yes, I'll admit most of my complaints while playing are because the game's challenging, but the one thing I never understand about Nintendo platformers is why they build these controllers with all these buttons then assign multiple moves to one button.. Maybe Retro's trying to up the challenge, but it's definitely a bummer, when it's something that could have easily not been a problem ever.
@IMAHAPYHIPPO: Yeah, they also inexplicably make you choose between the d-pad and analog stick. I find it much easier to use the d-pad on land and the analog stick underwater, which works perfectly in Rayman Legends, so it's a little annoying that the option just isn't there, for absolutely no logical reason.
A friend and I were playing today. Got through the first boss and world 2. Good gawd did we lose a lot of lives. Went from 32 to 5.
for me world one through 4 was a breeze. world 5 is where thing get chaotic. tho world 4 boss and level before that gave me some trouble too.
tho as for the k levels those are all hard including k level one but repeat a level multiple time and ur good to go.

I'm sure it's the same philosophy that led Nintendo to the Wii remote and the giant A button on the GC controller. They want controls to be as simple as possible.
But I have no idea why they have so few customization options in Tropical Freeze if they're going to have them at all.
Indeed. My GF gets extremely frustrated with it. I think it's awesome. :D We are currently at world 3..
So, btw, Player 1 always has to be Donkey right? Only Player 2 can change monkey? This is quite odd to me.. I do like Donkey, but I want to try the other ones.. It seems that this game is quite filled with annoying little things that don't make any sense..
That you can't use the thumbstick and d-pad at the same time is probably the weirdest. So the d-pad is supposed to not be used at all for anything when you've chosen to control the game with the thumbstick? Why in the world? Why?! They could just as well both be activated all the time.
I'm really happy it's hard. I haven't bought a Wii U yet but when I do I'll get this game. I'm so sick of the Mario games being so easy. Platformers need to be hard. It makes it fun. I played DK country Returns on my 3DS and I was happy it wasn't a complete pushover. It was actually challenging. I'm sick of games being so easy that I just fly through them.
hows the difficulty compared w/ returns?
dixie kong is infinite cheat mode...lol
its juts slighty easier than returns for me..but i just played world 1...i havnt even seen how hard the game gets.
Yea... I kind of wish they would force a kong on your for a specific level. Seems too easy to just go buy dixie. It is still plenty challenging in the later levels. But I just feel they could of made some of the levels even more interesting if you had to properly use Crank,Diddy, or Dixie for a level.

Mario is made with 6 year olds in mind and no one else, I think a lot of people are geting sick of Mario. A lot more still eat it up though
@Chozofication: I think Mario finds a decent balance for difficulty. It's easy enough at the beginning that anybody can pick up and play, but some of the bonus worlds in 3D World... Jesus Christ... Some of those were one hell of a challenge.

See, they count on those aforementioned six year olds to be good enough to attempt the few challenging levels at the end. Obviously the game appeals to more than just new players, but it's built for new players.
hmmm, i got to 90+ lives fairly quickly and have yet to drop below 90. i'm actually finding this dk to be rather easy. on 6-3 now and have no hope of seeing a challenge.
they clearly made this easier than dk returns. the 2 hearts on rocket levels is the easiest example to point out.
oh well, it's still an amazing platformer, and i can't figure out why gs gave it a 6/10. it has great sound, visuals, no bugs or glitches, runs at 60fps, controls perfectly, and i have yet to see one of those cheap deaths that they mentioned.
I've never been that good with platformers and this is my first DK game. OMG, this game is damn tough for someone like me. World 5 is just destroying me right now.
The game itself looks and sounds amazing however; i'm loving the soundtrack! I've probably died a billion time by now but still having fun. :D
