Okay, so I went and bought one yesterday, not really easy to find, even here, in Romania where these things don`t fly off the shelves and the pricing is crazy (in some retail stores it was as expensive as the 360). So, I have an European version, bundled with Wii Sports. First thing : the packaging is very cool, the two compartiments were a very stylish idea as well as a practical one. The Wii itself is smaller than i expected and looks great. So, here come the questions :

- is it safer to set the console vertically or horizontally ? For stability reasons I set it up horizontally, but i was wondering about the disc mechanism and such.

- when i looked at the Wiimote there were some minor scratches on it, near the buttons and near the speaker holes. I didn`t do those and the package was factory sealed. Is this a normal issue ?

- there was no way i could connect to the wii shop channel and wii connect 24 if, in the configuration menu, the selected country was mine, i had to switch it to united kingdom to connect to the shop channel and download the opera browser. Note, however, that i could update the system`s software without making this modification. Mkay, while i can understand this, i have to ask : if i buy wii points of a NA site like www.videogameplus.ca, will i be able to use them on this configuration ?

Thank you for reading all this (if it applies :D) and, in advance, for answering (also, if applies).

No it does not matter whether you stand it horizontal or vertical.

No it is not normal to have scratches on the wiimote if its brand new, but im guessing its nothing big

you shouldnt have a problem with the wii points

Enjoy your Wii :D

1. It doesn't really matter, but it will probably generate less heat if it's vertical.

2. Again, if these are very minor scratches, it probably shouldn't be a problem. My controllers were pristine, but yours may have been a little damaged. They're tough little controllers though.

3. I would stick with your local provider... But if you can't connect, though, you probably shouldn't worry about getting any points.

Well, the scratches don`t bother me too much, probably somewhere in the automated packaging process there is a flaw, dust particles and such may scratch their surface. The nunchuck attachment was perfect though. Now what batteries do you use with your wiimote ? I have some NIMH 2100 mAh rechargeables, i believe those should be okay, right ?

as long as they're alkaline batteries its fine. why alkaline? because the wii mote is subject to motion and alkaline are less likely to leak.

Help ! I just tried to clean the surface of the Wii with a soft cloth and it seems to leave some fine scratches. What do you use for cleaning the console ?

I use energizer rechargeables myself and have those little scratches also. No big.

... no offense but why the hell would it be dirty (especially already)... perhaps you should clean it when it's truly dusty and dirty, that way the "scratched layer" won't get scratched, instead you'll be removing actual dirt... but I guess if it's TRULY that important, then simply use the same thing you'd use to clean your glasses...

I just use Swiffers to remove dust. I never use like pledge and a rag and I have no scratches except for those manufacturing ones.
