which one is more important to you, graphics or art style? mario galaxy looks great but why? is it because of the great art style or how much its pushing the system? futhermore, what about okami which is not graphic intencive at all but still looks great. conduit is getting a lot of flack in this case. it IS nice in the graphics department but is said by many to have a horrible art style(i am just using this as an example. do not turn this into an argument of the conduit. thanks)

i personally think that the art style is way more important. gears of war just looks ugly to me.

surely there very interconected? maybe u should have said something like technical ability V art style. sorry..im just nitpicking :P anywho art style. i do like to see what a console, handheld or PC can do when its maxed out or when a dev really gives it the beans with clever programming. id love to see what epic or ID or crytek could do with the wii (and a shame we wont see what factor 5 does now :( ). but the bottom line is what is on the screen at the end of the day. if a developer can make a more visually appealing game without using fancy shader effects and such like then all the better. if certain effects like bloom or bump mapping would hurt the artistic direction of the game then it should be left out. but if it can help then it should definately be used.

I'm not overly fond of gritty, "realistic" graphics. They tend to lookthe same, and realistic graphics don't match the quality of live-action TV and movies anyways. If you're using animated graphics, you might as well play to its strengths and go artistic.

I never really thought about this. I prefer a game with a better art style than graphics.

Okami (Art style):

Gears of War (Graphics):

Also, there's many more possibilities with Art $tyles. (According to Gamespot that's a bad word if the $=S).

ya they are very much interweaved but you can still make a distinction between the two. also i would have to say that the system specs make better art styles though. things like megaman 9(more nostalgia based) and okami do not push the systems that much but look way better than most of the games now days. i would agree though that mario galaxy did need a certain amount of power in the system to pull off.

i would say more powerful systems open up more options for art styles but not nessasarally better ones.

The graphics in the Conduit are so advanced on Wii that it does not need any form of art style.

Like wise, Okami's art style is so great that the graphics doesn't even need to be all that good.

I don't really care for either give me 2D for all I care so long as its a great game, but if I had to choose yeh I would pick graphics because you get better physics with them.

Art style is more important on the Wii, and I like a good combination of both personally. Like Okami and SMG blended both for great looks.

I prefer art style because most people nowadays are trying to be realistic which in the end makes it look like everything else. I want an art style that is beautiful not something generic that looks like the majority of other titles.

I think they are both important, but a game with technical and graphical limitations can still clearly be amazing if the art style is superb. Oh and this is my 1000 post

I prefer artbut it needs to flow. Sometimes I think games really need to go with a simple fluid art choice that pulls the game together until there art improves. I personaly think that a simple art change could do wonders for games with bland exteriors. However, art isn't an excuse for poor technical graphics.

Art Style is more important. A good combination of this and graphics (like Wind Waker was) is perfect.

Art style. If a game has a good art style, it pretty much automaticallly has good graphics. Prince of Persia, for example, wouldn't look too good without the cel chader, but but because of it's painting-esque art style, it looks great.

It truly depends on the game. Okami and Windwaker with nex gen graphics would have been weird but games like RE4 or Call of Duty with cell-shading would just be weird. There has to be a good mix usually and normally it depends on the genre.

Art Style. Everygame has an art style when you think about it though. Some are better then others. Better thread would be realistic graphics vs creative/original graphics.

but realistic graphics is a type of art style and that thread would be asking a totally different question. graphics to me are like lighting effects, bloom, and so on. yes, every game does have an art style but many are just plain uninspired.

that would be a good separate thread though.

art style is a very broad thing it is every tree to the way the main char looks to the odd shaped backround so im a little confused as to how you mean art style do you mean the weird effects that some games use like okami nmh madworld or do you mean the look of objects and chars

i probably say graphics either way. which would you rather look at crysis or okami?

also graphics are alot more then lightinganbloom effect its a alot of things that come togather to look real.

id rather look at okami. opinions differ. that is why i have a poll. and yes, graphics are more than just those two things. that is why i said "and so on". i got lazy and didn't feel like listing a whole bunch of stuff. just sayin...

A balance of the two is needed, but the extend of the art style is really supported by the graphics. One without the other is likePB without the J. Mario without Luigi, Batman without Robin, Jordan without Pippin, Tiger without his awesome fist pump.

I'm a graphics artist and I've seen games on a powerrful system with an artstyle that made me eww, and games on graphically inferior systems that made me say, that is cool
