GTA CWs Screenshots

Nintendo Power magazine has some new details about the upcoming Grand Theft Auto : Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS. The magazine reveals that the game will have a cel-shaded look and action will be viewed from an isometric perspective. The first screenshots of the game will be soon available.

- True GTA game - sandbox gameplay, open-world environment, gritty crime narrative.
- M-rating
- Isometric camera angle
- Cel-shaded polygons w/ black borders
- good touch-screen implementation - 'tasteful' minigames, streamlining interface
- UI based on a PDA - hub for email, contacts, map, music player, GPS, stat-tracking
- stats uploaded to Rockstar Social Club website via Wi-Fi
- finger-sized icons
- missions designed for shorter periods of play, arcade quality
- aiming with control pad, auto targeting with R button
- subtle autosteer
- if you fail a mission, you can jump back to the action sequence
- chain gun, flamethrower
- good portion of Liberty City is modeled in the game (different routes than console games)
- no probems with load times, draw-in or frame rate
- lots of pedestrians, cars, etc on screen
- Wanted system - objective is to disable police cars any way possible
- real-time weather effects, 24-hour day/night cycle
- lots of radio stations to listen to (more instrumentals than vocals)
- 800,000 lines of hand-optimized source code (hey, the people like the info, right?)
- no details yet on multiplayer/Wi-Fi features

Is it just me or do those graphics look pretty bad?

I guess they're better than GTA 1 and 2 and I know its early days but the game looks really jagged and cartoony

Those screenshots are from a magazine which means they are water mark, that why the graphics look that way.

You both said it well. I've seen much better graphics coming from Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing: Wild World, but this?

regardless of whether or not these screens were taken from a magazine, the quality isn't very good.

perhaps the ds isn't capable of running a 3D engine based GTA. still, birds eye view GTA's were fun back in the day.

lol men))) It's full 3D, just using cell-shading. It looks really stylish.With great storyline and "M" rating I guess this game would be fantastic!

What did you expect?

There is no way that a game as LARGE as this(modled after liberty city,pretty huge) can be rendered in full 3d view with cars,pedestrians,and buildings on the ds.(Pretty sure someone is going to bring of Tony hawk. One,the levels are segmented. Second,there aren't anything else than you and the mapand some npc that go back and forth,but that can't even compare to a freeroaming game like GTA.

As with everything under the sun, I will reserve judgement until I see the final version in motion on an actual DS... not YouTube, not screen captures, but right there in front o me playin'... for me the game is so much more than graphics when it comes to any franchise porting over to the DS. I liked the DS take on "Resident Evil", I actually prefer the version of "Tiger Woods" over even the console versions because of the stylus control and how it mimics a swing... there's more to a DS title than graphics. This game could be just as much fun in it;s own way, give 'em a chance.ston3henge

Well, I'm actually going to agree with you. Why base your judgement on only a few screen shots? The game, as far as I know, isn't even done. They could even be working on the graphics. I never liked the GTA series and probably won't get this game just because I don't enjoy the game material, but it makes no sense to me that people justify purchase from a few simple pictures of an unfinished game.

I actually truly enjoyed the first few GTA's, and this looks like it could be a great addition to the series.

i honestly dont know what this whole "magazine print watermark" thing has to do with anything.

3D screenshots of games on platforms like PS3 and 360 still look amazing. i doubt that that has anything to do with anything.

we're just dealing with a different generation of gamers.. ones that are used to post GTA2 era that dont appreciate the classic birdseye view of the original GTAs.

seeing as i thoroughly enjoyed GTA and GTA2 as a graphically simple birdseye view game, i think the potential for this game is really unlimited. it could be quite the nostalgic experience. i never really got into any of the grand theft auto games post-GTA2 anyway.

and to this day DS can still pull off a 3D gta, but with some less content and obviously less graphical goodness

No, actually im pretty amazed by the graphics here.. cell shaded is the best the ds can handle, and many games should learn this. Now im pretty excited for this title. And i believe they will do some more adjustments to the game, like what are those bars up there lol.

Seeing those screenshots has made me a lot more interested in this game. I personally like the art style Rockstar have given it; did people honestly expect GTA to translate onto the DS in full 3D?

I have faith in Rockstar, they're always thorough when it comes to GTA games.
